Duodecimo, orange boards (hardcover), gilt letters and decoration to upper cover, 405 pp. Fine in a Very Good+ dust jacket with sunned spine. From dust jacket: Mitchell was at the bar, his back to the door, sipping from a shot glass. There was no sign of the pot-bellied man or any of the girls. For a man in boots and spurs, Tree made very little sound as he walked on the sawdust. Light from the doorway shone on Mitchell and cast both his and Tree's shadows across the bar. Mitchell didn't look up from his glass until he heard a voice grown and then bark out: "Hey, you!" Tree's right hand already was on the butt of the belt gun when he shouted. Mitchell tried to draw, but the Colt's cylinder didn't clear the belt before Tree fired. Tree Hooker will take on anything -- man, animal, or force of nature -- that stands in the way of his cattle drives during the Civil War. He's a Confederate soldier trying to save his country from starvation. Assigned to lead a group of tough, sun-baked cow hunters, he sets out to supply the South with beef from the herds on Florida's plains. Plenty of others also want those herds. There are the Yankees, led by men like Major Dan Greenley. He's tired of the war and he knows that it'll end quickly once the Confederacy runs out of food. Greenley is new to Florida and he still believes in fighting by the rules of civilized warfare. But he's also a fast learner. He soon realizes that there is no such thing as civilized warfare out in the palmetto scrub. The cattle ranges also harbor outlaws like the Brockton clan. Otto Brockton and his three sons don't care who wins the war as long as they reap profits from it. They're gunfighters and rustlers who sell their skills to the highest bidder. The Brocktons are as dangerous as the giant diamondback rattlesnakes that also inhabit the palmetto scrub. But there's a difference. Rattlers warn before they strike. A few people try to keep their humanity despite being surrounded by the horrors of war. Doris Brava is one of those. A young widow surviving on her own in Yankee-occupied St. Augustine, she finds hope and love in an unlikely place -- Greenley's arms. But hope and love can't shield Doris from the savagery that rules on the palmetto plains. Literature, Florida, Floridiana, Cracker Western. bslic.

Cattle from the Florida plains are needed to save a desperate South from starvation. But quicksand and snake-filled swamps, Yankee raiders, and vicious outlaws block the trails between Florida and the rest of the Confederacy. Men like Tree Hooker, tough as alligator hide and quick with gun, knife, or whip, reckon with Union forces and renegades when they take on the job of driving the herds.
