FIRST EDITION THUS. 8vo. 8.25 x 5.5 inches. 74 + [4] pp. In black pictorial stiff card boards with white titles. Slight wear to corners and scattered foxing of fore edge, fly leaves and traces in some margins; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by wood engravings by David Farleigh, including title page. Decorated black endpapers. 'Dissatisfied with the teachings of respectable white missionaries, an African girl embarks upon her own quest for God and Truth. Journeying through the forest, she encounters various religious figures, each one seeking to convert her to their own brand of faith' (Quoted in Library Hub). The black girl has been seen as an emerging feminist figure, strong and intelligent, in contrast to some of the uninspiring and ignorant white people that she encounters on her religious quest. A controversial (for its religious, sexual and racial themes) and influential work by Bernard Shaw which first appeared earlier in 1932 in Short Stories, Scraps and Shavings and was then separately published in this edition, with wood engravings by the artist and illustrator John Farleigh (1900-65).
