2004 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1733). HB. xiv + 364pp . The author, an officer of the Royal Regiment of Foot of Ireland, was sent with eleven other regiments under General Richard Ingoldsby by William III to his native Holland in 1701. Millner took with him a diary to record his experiences. So began his â compendious journalâ of Britainâ s campaigns against France in the twelve opening years of the 18th century, many under the command of that great Captain, John, Duke of Marlborough. Such an eye-witness account, rare even during the Napoleonic Wars a century later, was unusual indeed in the early 18th century, which makes this book a prized treasure to the student of Marlboroughâ s campaigns. Present at the battles of Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde, and Malplaquet, Millnerâ s account is also unusual for the trouble he has taken, not merely to describe the battles, sieges, skirmishes and other engagements he witnessed, but also to assemble much detailed data ( laid out in the form of tables) of casualties, orders of battle etc. As such his book is an indispensible aid to all students of 18th century warfare and of Marlboroughâ s campaigns in particular. A rare and valued find indeed.

An interesting letter regarding the early cultivation of bananas in London. 1p, 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight nicking to one edge. Neatly written over nine lines. Reads: 'Sir Everard Home is much obliged to Messrs. Laddiges for a present of some very fine Bananas, which were quite ripe, and had a flavour Sir Everard had no idea that they ever could acquire in this Climate. He mentioned yesterday to Mr Eyton with astonishment who said they had fruited at Kew, but not He believed to such perfection'. 'Eyton' is probably the naturalist Thomas Campbell Eyton (1809-1880), a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

The case concerns a disagreement between 'Mr. Carter' and 'Mr Fisher', the latter having with his 'Ancestors' 'enjoyed this Estate for 70 Years past without any Interruption whatsoever'. The main body of the text is in the hand of Way or an employee, with Glynn's autograph opinion on two questions extending to nine lines (four lines for 'Q[uery]. 1st', and five lines for 'Q[uery] 2d'). The first page is headed 'Case'. Following a lengthy description of a case history of '13th. March 33d. Henry 8th.' are the two questions ('Q. 1st', and 'Q 2d'). The first question, regarding which Glynn is asked to 'advise fully', is whether the property is common or manor land. The second question follows on from the fact that 'Mr. Fisher hath been advised to cut the Trees down and to try the right with Mr. Carter It being insisted that in all Events Mr. Fisher is intitled to the Wastes in the lanes between his own Land & Whether his Estate may be still called a Manor Therefore'. In his reply to the latter Glynn refers to the year 1770. See Glynn's entry in the Oxford DNB. ("He spoke only once on America in 1774, but he voiced all the prejudices of London radicals against the Quebec Bill. Three times he rose on the second reading on 26 May 1774, attacking the measure for putting English subjects under French law, for not giving the colony a representative assembly, and for not safeguarding the protestant religion. He spoke twice more at the report stage on 10 June, to urge the merits of jury trials.").
