Schüddekopf, Otto-Ernst, 1912-1984. Fascism. Translated from the German by Margaret Vallance. With 96 black and white illustrations. New York: Praeger Publishers, 1973, 224pp., good dust-jacket but worn at top of spine, cover price $8.50, very good light blue cloth with some light wear to cover. Dust-jacket design by David Eldred. Revolutions of our time. Translation of Bis alles in Scherben fällt. - Today "fascism" is a pejorative term. The ideas that inspired the movements that sprang up in Europe between the world wars have become equated with the excesses of the Nazis under Hitler and the Italian Fascists under Mussolini. But, for millions, fascism was a genuine revolutionary movement having as much in common with the socialist movements as it did with pure nationalism. In this book Otto-Emst Schüddekopf explores the meaning of the movement in its great variety. He presents a history of fascism and its manifestations, analyzing all its modes and types and weaving them into a broad chronological framework. He asks who became fascist and why they did so. What were the elements of fascism that attracted the masses - the charismatic leadership; the doctrine of a substitute religion; the world of symbols, slogans, human ideals, and forms of salutation; or the songs, games, and feasts? How did the driving forces of fascism - nationalism, militarism, and racism - cut through society s accepted values? Schiiddekopf separates the ideology from the reality, outlining the theoretical and practical principles. He studies fascism s precursors, its opponents before 1945, and the fascism of today. -- THE AUTHOR: Otto-Emst Schüddekopf is a German historian whose special areas of study are politics and military geography. He is a graduate of the University of Berlin and holds a Ph.D. in philosophy. Before World War II, he worked as a civilian with the historical department of the German Air Force, but in 1940 he joined the army as historian to the Army Staff. In 1942, he became a member of Friedrich Hielscher s intelligence service, involved in political resistance against Nazism. He is the author of several books published in German, on politics and the military, and he is at present Lecturer in Comparative Textbook Analysis at the International Textbook Institute at Brunswick, Germany.
