Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. Pissaro, Camille Ilustrador. 2nd Edition. CAMILLE PISSARRO, LETTERS TO HIS SON LUCIEN, edited by John Rewald with the assistance of Lucien Pissarro, translated from the French manuscript by Lionel Abel, 90 B/W illustrations by Camille Pissarro, hardcover, stated 2nd edition, 1943. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in near fine condition, with no dog-ears, marks, or tears. Not a remainder nor library book. There is a bookplate of a prior owner affixed to the first free endpaper. The pages and endpapers are age-toned. The burgundy cloth boards are in good condition (bumped and faded spine, edge wear, a few spotted areas). Two portions of the dismantled dust jacket included. 10 x 6 ½, 367 pages, 37 ounces XX [From one portion of the dust jacket] This first publication of Camille Pissarro's weekly letters to his son Lucien, from 1883 to the painter's death in 1903, forms what might well be called A DIARY OF IMPRESSIONISM. Pissarro, named by his contemporaries The Father of Impressionism, ten years older than his comrades, thinks and feels with and for the whole group, and his letters mirror not only his own struggles but the character, work and destiny of the famous men around him: Gauguin, Renoir, Monet, Degas, Cézanne. To the historian, these letters give a wealth of first-hand material, to the artist they reveal the methods and theories of a master, to the average reader they disclose the intimate life, the everyday struggle of a great and at the same time simple, warmhearted and modest man, with a gift not only for the brush, but also for the pen. Pissarro's comments on life, politics and literature are as pungent and interesting as those on art and artists. But it is when he tries to communicate to his son, also a painter, his views on art that these letters take on their highest importance as a unique and illuminating document on Impressionism.

Hardcover. Condición: Used - Very Good. Camille Pissaro was the dean of the impressionist painters, not only because of his age - he was two years older than Manet, who at first put himself at the head of the movement - but also by virtue of his wisdom and his balanced, kind and warmhearted personality.' So begins John Rewald's intimate and evocative biography of Pissarro, friend of Monet, Renoir, Sisley, and Others, mentor to Cezanne and Gauguin, ally of Signac and of Seurat, whose divisionist style he briefly adopted. The years of Pissaro's life, 1830 to 1903, encompassed the great flowering in French art of the revolutionary style of the Impressionists, when not only the way of painting changed, but also the subject matter. In natural light-filled canvases the artists freshly saw the world around them, the rural landscapes, the city views, the cafe scenes. Pissarro's particular feeling for the countryside of France and those who peopled it comes through strongly in these marvelous works. Though he had success only late in his lifetime and was often hard-pressed to support his wife and six children (some of whom the author has known), Pissarro stands as a giant of the period and comes alive in this book not only as a painter of great distinction but as a generous and devoted parent and colleague. Here are forty of the master's glowing landscapes and figure paintings in color, along with an additional two dozen landscapes in superb black and white, as well as drawings by Pissarro and others and photographs of the arts, his family and friends, and the places they all lived and worked in together. Author John Rewald is perhaps better equipped to write this book than any other art historian; his monumental 'History ofImpressionism' is the definitive survey period. Here he delves deeply and with delight into the work of one of the period's great masters. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks. wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector.

This marvellously illustrated book charts the evolution of his painting, and celebrates his compositional brilliance, technical skill and innovatory approach. Amongst the French Impressionists, Camille Pissarro was the only painter to show his work at all of the eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1874-1886. As a Jew, albeit a non-observant one, born in the Caribbean who retained his Danish passport throughout his life, Pissarro was an outsider, a situation that undoubtedly contributed to his artistic, personal and political independence. Like Renoir and unlike Sisley, Pissarro?s style changed between the 1870s and 1880s, including exploration of Pointillism in View from my Window, Eragny, 1886-88, and The Apple Pickers, Eragny, 1888. In the 1890s, the artist?s style returned to something close to that of the 1870s. Amongst the less common genres including in this book are Still Life, 1867, and Pink Peonies, 1873. Ref V V 1.
