Descripción: 1910, Montrouge [Paris], 1910. Original Litho. Picasso. Max Jacob. MAX JACOB. Double Signed Litho. Montrouge [Paris] (Seine). 1910. 14" 7/8 X 10" 3/4 on plain paper stock printed in black. Number 17 of only 30 copies. A rare early illustration of Picasso's close friend, Max Jacob, done in celebration of Jacob's conversion to Christianity. Jacob, who had Jewish origins, claimed to have had a vision of Christ in 1909, causing his conversion. The illustration of Jacob [the first of Picasso's drawings of Max Jacob] seated comfortably in a fine armchair, dressed in his three piece suit, his dome appropriately receptive. The printed text: [Top] A mon ami Max Jacob / Picasso .10 / 22 R. Victor Hugo / Montrouge (Seine) - [Middle] L'archange foudroyé n'eut que le temps / de desserrer sa cravate . On aurait sit qu'il / priait encore./ C. Max Jacob. Signed in pencil with his new Christian name: "C. Max Jacob" & by "Picasso" at the bottom. A very good or better example of this rare piece - Max Jacob is regarded as an important link between the symbolists & the surrealists, as can be seen in his prose poems Le cornet à dés (The Dice Box, 1917. Throughout the year of 1901, Picasso traveled to Barcelona & Paris for art exhibitions. During an exhibition in Paris, Picasso met Max Jacob. Max Jacob was a poet, painter, & art critic with connections in the Parisian cultural scene. The two artists developed a friendship after Jacob left an admiring note for Picasso at the art gallery displaying Picasso's work (Richardson Vol. I, 203). Jacob introduced Picasso to the French language and to French theatre; Jacob was also an actor. Jacob took Picasso to see operas which possibly included I Pagliacci & La Bohème (Richardson Vol. I, 338). "At night there were frequent visits to the cabarets of Montmartre such as the Chat Noir, and, when tickets could be found, to the Moulin Rouge" (Penrose Picasso 76). Picasso & his friends also enjoyed the artistic atmosphere of Le Lapin Agile. Artists & writers would congregate at the small café to listen to recitals, exchange ideas & celebrate special occasions such as the opening of an exhibition (Penrose Picasso 117). The walls of the café were lined with work by artists that were used as payment for debts. Theatrical entertainment was a prominent part of Picasso's social life in Paris. By 1904, Picasso had established a foothold in Paris and would remain in the cultural center of Europe for the rest of his life. Picasso & Max Jacob cultivated their talents in a dwelling known as the Bateau Lavoir. According to Penrose, this place was ". . . composed it seemed of nothing but lofts & cellars, all in such a sad state of repair. . . " (Picasso 96). Artists of all endeavors were attracted to this bohemian style of living. Picasso's neighbors included painters, sculptors, writers & actors (Penrose Picasso 102). One of Picasso's most influential friends entered his life in 1905: Guillaume Apollinaire. "From the first encounter, Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire established a creative dialogue that fostered and inspired some of their finest art & poetry". Apollinaire was a poet & playwright, identified as a Surrealist, who kept close connections with literary & artistic figures in Paris including Max Jacob & André Salmon. He was a great source for Picasso to meet writers & theatre artists. Many of Picasso's friends encouraged him to frequent the theatre with artists & poets from Paris (Picasso Penrose 177). Even though Picasso was not in Paris, he managed to find groups of artistic individuals to stay abreast of cultural gossip & happenings. Picasso's connections with writers led him to create several illustrations for books of poetry for friends. For example, during summer 1910 in Cadaques, Catalonia, painting with Derain, Picasso was commissioned to illustrate a poetic novel written by Max Jacob titled Saint Matorel issued by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in 1911. (Penrose Picasso 179). This was only the first of five collections of poetry by Max Jacob that contain. Signed by Author(s). Nº de ref. de la librería 32441

Descripción: Ambroise Vollard, Paris, 1931. Paperback. Estado de conservación: vg. Limited edition. 1/340. Folio. XIV, [3], [16]pp numbered A to P, [3], 92, [8]pp. (text), [13] loose plates, as issued. Uncut. Original glassine over illustrated dust-jacket and stiff wraps. Book housed in its green cloth portfolio within its matching green cloth slipcase. Gold lettering on slipcase's spine. "Le Chef-d’œuvre inconnu" (The Unknown Masterpiece) is a short story by Honoré de Balzac. It was first published in the newspaper L'Artiste with the title "Maître Frenhofer" (Master Frenhofer) in August 1831. It appeared again later in the same year under the title "Catherine Lescault, conte fantastique." It was published in Balzac's Études philosophiques in 1837 and was integrated into the "La Comédie Humaine" in 1846. In 1927 Pablo Picasso was commissioned by publisher Ambroise Vollard to do a series of illustrations for Balzac's novella. After reading it Picasso became obsessed with this uncanny tale of a painter's obsession to create a masterpiece. Picasso accepted the Balzac commission from art dealer Ambroise Vollard and completed the thirteen etchings in 1931 for the centennial edition. As a result, this striking illustrated edition of "Le Chef-d'Oeuvre Inconnu" is considered Picasso's livre d'artiste masterpiece. With Vollard as impressario, the book was meticulously planned and produced, and separate printers were chosen to handle the different types of reproductions: etchings, wood engravings, text and typography. Many have considered these etchings "landmarks in the history of engraving." Balzac’s story, admired by other painters like Cézanne and Matisse, is among other things, a tale of an artist ahead of his time. Set in the 17th century, "Le Chef-d'Oeuvre Inconnu" (The Hidden Masterpiece) tells the story of an aging painter named Frenhofer, who obsessively labors over a work he has kept secret for years. When two younger admirers, painters Poussin and Porbus, finally manage to see Frenhofer’s secret canvas, they are appalled - it appears to them nothing more than an indistinct mess of lines, colors and shapes - and they mock the older artist and assume their celebrated friend has gone insane. The next day, Frenhofer destroys all his work and kills himself. Picasso later claimed that the ghost of Balzac haunted him, and he found himself so compelled by the story that in 1937, he chose for his new studio a 17th century townhouse located at 7 Rue des Grands-Augustin, the very house many believed to be the setting of the opening scene in "The Hidden Masterpiece." It was in his new studio that Picasso painted his own Masterpiece, Guernica. Splendidly illustrated with 67 in-text wood engravings, and 13 original tissue-guarded etchings by Pablo Picasso, this copy is No.171 of 240 printed on Rives paper (of a total edition of 340). Minor age-toning and slight soiling on slipcase. Glassine slightly sunned. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in French. Slipcase and glassine in overall good+, portfolio, dust-jacket, wrappers and interior in very good condition. Nº de ref. de la librería 37049

In very good condition, but one of the etching suffered for the text ink impression, that created a veil of lettering on the background. Ref: Cramer, no.28. Bloch n.297-298. FROM CRAMER # 28: "This suite of 18 scenes on two plates was Picasso's protest against Franco's coup d'etat. His intention had been to make postcards or tracts which would have an impact on the Spanish people. For this reason - inspired by comics and the images of Epinal - the artist chose to use a sort of comic strip as his medium. In it, he derides the adventures of the spurious caballero Franco who, instead of attacking the enemy, strikes his own horse. In January 8 and 9, 1937 Picasso made two plates with 9 scenes on the first, and 5 on the second, 14 of the final 18 scenes. On May he "colored" the etchings with aquatint, and abandoned the idea of making postcards and decide to complete the second plate. With the recent bombing of Guernica (April 26, 1937) in minde, he etched 4 other scenes, no longher in the style of caricature, but clearly accusatory. In the scenes the artist created on June 7, Franco no longer appears, but the tyrant is accused by suffering women and by mothers - with their children at their side- crying out their despair. Picasso published the two plates with a poem entitled Sueño y Mentira de Franco. ". Nº de ref. de la librería ABE-10510576221

Descripción: New York Limited Editions Club 1934, 1934. Quarto. 117pp. One of 1,500 copies on French Rives and signed by Picasso. Illustrated with six original etchings in black, one of which is signed in the plate and dated in reverse, and thirty lithographs printed in sanguine after drawings. This is the only American publication with original Picasso etchings, which are "among his most important in the Classical style," according to The Artist and the Book. However experimental and avant-garde he may have been throughout his life, the Lysistrata marks a clear retrogression to the artist's earlier classicist mode, an appropriate follow-up to his acclaimed Les Métamorphoses and fitting for the classical nature of this book. The Limited Editions Club printed the volume at their own printing shop in Westport, Connecticut. The book was designed by the Club's publisher, George Macy, who had eagerly anticipated the book's production and praised Picasso's hand as "sure and confident," noting that the beauty of the etchings lay in their simplicity. A fine, bright copy in boards covered with patterned paper in three colors from drawings by Picasso. Wrapped in the original glassine, which is still crisp overall, save for slight edgewear. Housed in a chemise of blue boards and patterned paper, which is sunned to the spine, and the original slipcase, which shows some wear to the corners and has a slight split starting to one corner. (The Artist and The Book 226; Cramer 24; LEC 57).
