Descripción: 1910, Montrouge [Paris], 1910. Original Litho. Picasso. Max Jacob. MAX JACOB. Double Signed Litho. Montrouge [Paris] (Seine). 1910. 14" 7/8 X 10" 3/4 on plain paper stock printed in black. Number 17 of only 30 copies. A rare early illustration of Picasso's close friend, Max Jacob, done in celebration of Jacob's conversion to Christianity. Jacob, who had Jewish origins, claimed to have had a vision of Christ in 1909, causing his conversion. The illustration of Jacob [the first of Picasso's drawings of Max Jacob] seated comfortably in a fine armchair, dressed in his three piece suit, his dome appropriately receptive. The printed text: [Top] A mon ami Max Jacob / Picasso .10 / 22 R. Victor Hugo / Montrouge (Seine) - [Middle] L'archange foudroyé n'eut que le temps / de desserrer sa cravate . On aurait sit qu'il / priait encore./ C. Max Jacob. Signed in pencil with his new Christian name: "C. Max Jacob" & by "Picasso" at the bottom. A very good or better example of this rare piece - Max Jacob is regarded as an important link between the symbolists & the surrealists, as can be seen in his prose poems Le cornet à dés (The Dice Box, 1917. Throughout the year of 1901, Picasso traveled to Barcelona & Paris for art exhibitions. During an exhibition in Paris, Picasso met Max Jacob. Max Jacob was a poet, painter, & art critic with connections in the Parisian cultural scene. The two artists developed a friendship after Jacob left an admiring note for Picasso at the art gallery displaying Picasso's work (Richardson Vol. I, 203). Jacob introduced Picasso to the French language and to French theatre; Jacob was also an actor. Jacob took Picasso to see operas which possibly included I Pagliacci & La Bohème (Richardson Vol. I, 338). "At night there were frequent visits to the cabarets of Montmartre such as the Chat Noir, and, when tickets could be found, to the Moulin Rouge" (Penrose Picasso 76). Picasso & his friends also enjoyed the artistic atmosphere of Le Lapin Agile. Artists & writers would congregate at the small café to listen to recitals, exchange ideas & celebrate special occasions such as the opening of an exhibition (Penrose Picasso 117). The walls of the café were lined with work by artists that were used as payment for debts. Theatrical entertainment was a prominent part of Picasso's social life in Paris. By 1904, Picasso had established a foothold in Paris and would remain in the cultural center of Europe for the rest of his life. Picasso & Max Jacob cultivated their talents in a dwelling known as the Bateau Lavoir. According to Penrose, this place was ". . . composed it seemed of nothing but lofts & cellars, all in such a sad state of repair. . . " (Picasso 96). Artists of all endeavors were attracted to this bohemian style of living. Picasso's neighbors included painters, sculptors, writers & actors (Penrose Picasso 102). One of Picasso's most influential friends entered his life in 1905: Guillaume Apollinaire. "From the first encounter, Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire established a creative dialogue that fostered and inspired some of their finest art & poetry". Apollinaire was a poet & playwright, identified as a Surrealist, who kept close connections with literary & artistic figures in Paris including Max Jacob & André Salmon. He was a great source for Picasso to meet writers & theatre artists. Many of Picasso's friends encouraged him to frequent the theatre with artists & poets from Paris (Picasso Penrose 177). Even though Picasso was not in Paris, he managed to find groups of artistic individuals to stay abreast of cultural gossip & happenings. Picasso's connections with writers led him to create several illustrations for books of poetry for friends. For example, during summer 1910 in Cadaques, Catalonia, painting with Derain, Picasso was commissioned to illustrate a poetic novel written by Max Jacob titled Saint Matorel issued by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in 1911. (Penrose Picasso 179). This was only the first of five collections of poetry by Max Jacob that contain. Signed by Author(s).

Esemplare magnifico, a pieni margini. Image size 35 x 27 cm. Sheet size 62.5 x 44.1 cm. Edition of 50. Signed in pencil lower right by Picasso, numbered lower left. Printed by Arnéra, Vallauris. This linocut is one of a series of Picasso's radical reinterpretations of Manet's famous painting, The Luncheon on the Grass, begun in June 1954 and continued over the next decade. By this late stage, the "Conversationalist" has lost his hair, has clearly aged, and now resembles Picasso himself, in conversation with a Victorine who could be said to resemble his wife, Jacqueline. Descripción: Linocut in brown, tan, black and white on Arches paper. Image size 39 x 30 cm. Sheet size 62.5 x 44.1 cm. Edition of 50. Signed in pencil lower right and numbered lower left by Picasso. Published Paris: Galerie Louise Leiris, 1962. Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe 1863 (luncheon on the grass) by Edouard Manet had a profound effect on a young Picasso when he first encountered it in 1890. Manet's style and treatment at the time were considered shocking and outside of the normal convention of painting at the time, in due course the work was rejected by the jury of the 1863 Salon. By the time Picasso saw this work, it had become a national icon. From 1954 - 1962 Picasso worked and reworked variations on the piece, making some 150 sketches, 27 paintings, 3 linocuts and 18 cardboard models. This lincout is extremely rare, having only been made in and edition of 50. Both Picasso and Manet before him was considered to be paying tribute to Europe's artistic heritage. Descripción: Gallimard, Paris, 1945. Estado de conservación: Used; Like New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Used; Like New. Le Desir Attrape par la Queue [Desire Caught by the Tail]. First edition, limited issue of 2,240. Paperback, 5.75 x 7.75, 62 pages. Signed and inscribed inside the front wrapper in red artist's crayon, "Pour James Plaut, Picasso, Paris, Mai 1945," with the addition of a wonderful sketch on the adjacent page showing a heart-shaped figure with an arrow in his mouth. In very good condition, the sketch a shade light, modest chipping to wrappers, evidence of early repair to spine. James S. Plaut (1912 - 1996) became Assistant Curator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1935. While working at the museum, he became involved in the burgeoning modern art movement and in 1936 he co-founded the Boston Museum of Modern Art (today, The Institute of Contemporary Art), a sister institution of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He became the museum's first official director in 1939 and organized a retrospective of Picasso's works in 1940, which included the great 'Guernica.'  In November 1944 he was selected to lead the newly-formed Art Looting Investigation Unit (ALIU) of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS).  Responsible for uncovering information regarding Nazi looting through extensive research and interviews, it was through this work that he interviewed Picasso on numerous occasions.  In the winter of 1941, soon after the Germans had occupied Paris, Picasso while ill spent three days writing a farcical play, Desire Caught by the Tail. It was first performed on 19 March, 1945 at the apartment of Louise and Michel Leiris in Paris, where it was performed by a star-studded cast that included Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Picasso's former lover Dora Maar. Musical accompaniment by Georges Hugnet and the narration was given by Albert Camus, describing the largely imaginary sets - that is, except for a large black box that served alternatively as a bed, a bathtub, and a coffin.  The spectators included Georges Braque and his wife, Cécile Éluard, Jacques Lacan and Jaime Sabartés. The event was photographed by Brassaï.Described as "surrealistic" and "simply weird," the play is rarely produced due to sheer incomprehensibility. There is no plot to speak of, and the characters all are abstractly named: besides the protagonist Big Foot and his love interest Tart, there are Onion, Round End, the Cousin, the two Bow-wows, Silence, Fat Anguish, Skinny Anguish and The Curtains. And the stage directions are highly impractical: the transparent doors light up and the dancing shadows of five monkeys eating carrots appear. Complete darkness. While the narrative is nonlinear and the meaning nearly impossible to decipher, the work has been praised despite (and sometimes for) its lack of message. Bernard Frechtman, who translated the work from the original French, writes in his Foreword, "It says nothing of human destiny or of the human condition. In an age which has discovered man with a capital M, it is gratifying to advise the reader that Picasso has nothing to say of man, nor of the universe. This in itself is a considerable achievement.". Descripción: Limited Editions Club, New York, 1934. Picasso, Pablo Ilustrador. Quarto. 117pp. One of 1,500 copies on French Rives and signed by Picasso. Illustrated with six original etchings in black, one of which is signed in the plate and dated in reverse, and thirty lithographs printed in sanguine after drawings. This is the only American publication with original Picasso etchings, which are "among his most important in the Classical style," according to The Artist and the Book. However experimental and avant-garde he may have been throughout his life, the Lysistrata marks a clear retrogression to the artist's earlier classicist mode, an appropriate follow-up to his acclaimed Les Métamorphoses and fitting for the classical nature of this book. The Limited Editions Club printed the volume at their own printing shop in Westport, Connecticut. The book was designed by the Club's publisher, George Macy, who had eagerly anticipated the book's production and praised Picasso's hand as "sure and confident," noting that the beauty of the etchings lay in their simplicity. A fine, bright copy in boards covered with patterned paper in three colors from drawings by Picasso. Wrapped in the original glassine, which is still crisp overall, save for slight edgewear. Housed in a chemise of blue boards and patterned paper, which is sunned to the spine, and the original slipcase, which shows some wear to the corners and has a slight split starting to one corner. (The Artist and The Book 226; Cramer 24; LEC 57).

1966. NP. 1966, 1966. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Near Fine. Quarto (285mm x 233mm). 20 typed sheets in French (rectos only), legibly hand-corrected throughout by Brassai in black ink. Housed in a black cloth album, with each sheet in a separate clear plastic file. In excellent condition, the final page a little creased and with minor loss to right-hand side, affecting one letter. Overall fresh and clean. ------ A superb unpublished and heavily corrected manuscript in French, in which Brassai recounts his visit to Picasso, a long-standing friend, at his home near Cannes. Brassai, who photographed much of Picasso's work in the 1940s, had published Conversations with Picasso in 1964, in which he created an intimate portrait of Picasso, covering their friendship and artistic collaboration, and recording each of their meetings with minute detail. Picasso said of the volume, "Read this book if you want to understand me". This account is written in a similar style, and during the course of the afternoon, Picasso speaks about his nostalgia for his old studios, his health, his enthusiasm for the recently invented felt-tip pen, his opinion of his own writings, his relationship with his wife Jacqueline, and his views on feminism. Though unmarked as such, it comes from the collection of Brassai's close friend and colleague, photographer Stefan Lorant. Nº de ref. de la librería 9624

CALLIGRAMMES.

(TALVART, I, page 80-81, n°15A). NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. Nº de ref. de la librería 004055

Descripción: James Thrall Soby; Cahiers d'Art, Hartford, CT; Paris, 1934. Softcover. Estado de conservación: g to vg. Folio. [14]pp (Text), 104pp (plates), [2]pp. Original spiral bound color photographically illustrated stiff glossy wrappers. Upper margin of title page inscribed by Man Ray: "Compliments of Man Ray." Book housed in an elegant custom-made grey clamshell box, with white lettering to spine. This important work is Man Ray's first monograph in which his friends pulled out all the stops to herald it. It begins with a portrait drawing of Man Ray by Pablo Picasso and consists of 104 photographs divided into five sections. The first section, which is a mixture of general subjects (still lifes, rooms, landscapes, cityscapes, and flowers), is prefaced by a short text entitled "The Age of Light." A poem by Paul Éluard is followed by a section on the female figure, mostly nudes, and André Breton introduces a section devoted to "The Visages of the Woman." A series of artists' portraits (including Marcel Duchamp) follows musing by Rrose Sélavy on "Men Before the Mirror," and the final section of Rayographs appears after Tristan Tzara's "When Things Dream." Man Ray made several different studies for the cover, until finally settling on this image of his own bust looking down on a blue-eyed blonde contemplating a plaster hand cradling a fragile lightbulb that mirrors a catching toy (a ball on a peg). (See Andrew Roth, "The Book of 101 Books," pp. 80-81). "Man Ray Photographs 1920-1934 Paris" had an unusual history. The volume did not sell well. Andrew Roth tells us, in "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" that the publisher, James Thrall Soby tried a little publisher sleight of hand. He altered a number of unsold copies of the book by removing their original title pages. "After replacing the title pages of these copies with one stating second edition, he returned them for sale." The impression he was trying to give was that the first edition had sold out. This clearly indicates that the book offered for sale here, is a first edition, second issue, the volume most commonly offered for sale around the world, and frequently incorrectly identified as an actual second edition. Moderate shelf wear. Spiral binding slightly chipped at head of spine. Covers slightly age-toned. Upper front corner bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in English and French. Clamshell box in overall very good, wrappers in good, interior in good+ to very good condition. Second edition (i.e First edition, second issue). Nº de ref. de la librería 40200
