Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Peter Magubane Ilustrador. 1st Edition. black as i am by Zindzi Mandela and Peter Magubane. Published by The Guild of Tutors Press, Los Angeles, California, 1978, first edition. Softcover, illustrated red wrappers, 8.5" x 11", 120 pages, illustrated with black & white photographs throughout. VERY GOOD Condition: covers show a touch of age, light shelf, edge and corner wear, the spine remains uncreased. Internally, tight, bright, clean and unmarked, a respectable copy of this elusive work. Zindzi Mandela's seminal 1978 poetry anthology was published at the end of the Black Consciousness Movement, a time of Black identity and resistance to apartheid. With painfully acute awareness of the inequality, her poetry reveals the life of a child under South Africa's apartheid and remains excruciatingly relevant today. The poems are accompanied by Peter Magubane's evocative photographs, which reflect the brutality of Black life under apartheid. South African poet and diplomat Zindziswa "Zindzi" Mandela was the youngest daughter of anti-apartheid activists, freedom fighters and politicians Nelson and Winnie Mandela. She is among the three youngest published poets in South African history. She died at age 59 from Covid-19.
