Octavo, black boards (hardcover), 179 pp. Fine, with bookplate; in a Very Good dust jacket with lightly rubbed edges. From dust jacket: In the last war Group Captain Leonard Cheshire became a legend. That he won a Victoria Cross was almost an inevitable outcome. But since the war his work on behalf of suffering humanity has made him an international figure, loved with reverence and humility. The Cheshire Homes are known throughout the world, but what are they? And how did they come into being? Above all, what made Leonard Cheshire turn from war to serve his fellows? In The Face of Victory Leonard Cheshire tells with a wealth of fascinating detail just how this astonishing change in his pattern of life came about. Of how, not long after he had seen an atom bomb dropped on Japan, he started on the path that brought him up against almost impossible odds, and brought a host of his fellows deep in his debt, not only in Britain but throughout the world. Running through the book is the story of Leonard Cheshire's search for the true religion, culminating in his conversion to Roman Catholicism. The devotion that made Leonard Cheshire ignore the odds and costs of war has become a devotion that makes him ignore the odds and costs of peace, and they can be as great, in a manner that clearly marks him out as one of the most remarkable men of our time. Religion, Catholicism, Aviation, British Biography. bslic.
