Lady Brassey was a skilled photographer and botanist and also had an interest in medicine. She and her husband (a Member of Parliament and accomplished sailor) traveled extensively on their yacht "Sunbeam," and Annie's lively books about their adventures found an eager audience. This book, published after she died of malaria at age 48, recounts travels in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Australia.

First American edition of this well-written account of Mrs. Brassey's yachting voyages from 1874-1878 on their 3-masted steam-powered schooner Sunbeam through the Mediterranean, Adriatic, with stops in Greece, Sicily, Cyprus, and extensive travels and stops through Constantinople, and the Ottoman Empire. Most of the woodcut engravings are based on photographs by Brassey (1839-1887) was an accomplished amateur photographer, and of which over 5600 survive in folio volumes held by the Huntington Library.

Bound with maroon leather over the spine and corners with gilt title on green leather title plate on the spine and further gilt decorations, contrasting maroon leather covered boards.The spine and corner leather is quite severely rubbed, but the book remains robust and square. Gilt upper closed page edge, hinge and text block firm, marbled end papers, no inscriptions. On the title page is written "Annie Brassey 1887", this looks very much like an authentic signature? Frontispiece opposisite of Sunbeam, tissue guarded. Fold out map in very good condition, no tears, but creased/folded in the wrong places. Abundantly and beautifully illustrated throughout. One or two spots to the end papers thereafter pages smooth, clean and bright. A very well preserved book.
