Cloth, folio, 32 cm. xii, 161 pp, colour ills. 498 entries. From the blurb - "London: A cartographic History is a catalogue of a unique collection of nearly 500 folding maps of London from 1746 to 1950. This remarkable collection was built up over fifty years by Joel Tabor, a private collector. These maps chart the social, historical and political development of London from its days as a burgeoning almost pastoral city in the 1740s to one of the busiest capital cities in the world. The collection includes excellent examples of maps by John Rocque (1746), Richard Horwood (1792-1799) and Christopher Greenwood (1827). It also contains early cycling maps, London Underground plans and even early copies of the 'now indispensible' A-Z. All the maps have been described carefully and many contain notes and bibliographical references. There: is a detailed essay by Ralph Hyde, short biographies of leading mapmakers and a brief essay on cartoographic techniques. This book seeks to provide valuable information for the historian, collector and anyone interested in the history of London." Fine in a dustwrapper which is creased at the top edge.
