Hardcover. First Edition. Patchen's second book, consisting of 800 copies, this copy INSCRIBED "with respect and admiration" for W. H. Auden on 10 May 1940 and SIGNED by Patchen. Patchen's first book brought him much acclaim including comparisons to Auden, unlikely as that might seem now. Among Patchen's accomplishments was the initiation of the poetry-and-jazz movement in the late 1950s. Although Auden never seems to have figured in an important way in Patchen's life, the elder poet did take part in a benefit for Patchen two decades after being presented with this book. A truly important presentation copy. Backstrip darkened, a few nicks in the cloth. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper.

Patchen hand painted the front and back covers so that each edition of Panels for the Walls of Heaven is unique. On the back cover he penned and signed, "This Edition is Limited to one hundred and fifty Numbered & Signed Copies with Covers Decorated by the Author. THREE. Kenneth Patchen." On the inside back cover in green, he has written, "no two covers alike. Copy 3." Printed by the "gillick press, berkeley," 67 numbered pages. The top and side of the pages are painted a maroon red. A cellophane sheet protects the painted covers including the inside back cover. Some aging visible to the light inside covers, otherwise fine. Panels for the Wall of Heaven is an example of the painted poetry Patchen, a self taught poet, created. Over his active career he wrote on many themes. He incorporated music into his poetry, reading his poetry to jazz in the 1950's and collaborating with John Cage.

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Patchen, Kenneth Ilustrador. Limited Edition. Extremely rare edition of Patchen's book of poetry featuring an original and unique ink and watercolor cover by the author. This one features the bearded Egir (Aegir), variously described as a giant or a Norse god of the sea who loved to give parties for the other gods. Text block in near fine condition: clean with no marks, tears, or dog ears. Photograph of Patchen (taken by Robin Carson) pasted onto third page. The front cover is stained and discolored in several places, but the watercolor of Egir is not affected. Likewise, the back cover is sun-tanned, discolored, and stained (just one place) ? see images of this book to your left. The spine likewise has some discoloring. The slipcase is in generally very good condition: a small section of the upper portion is intact but torn away from the side. There is some shelf rubbing and chipping, particularly along the edges, but the text is still very clear on both front and back of the slipcase. From The Beat Page on the Internet : Kenneth Patchen was born in Niles, Ohio, in 1911. From the age of twelve, he kept a diary and read Dante, Homer, Burns, Shakespeare, and Melville. He attended Alexander Meiklejohn's Experimental College for one year and then the University of Wisconsin. He was employed in a variety of jobs as a migrant worker in the United States and Canada. "Permanence," a sonnet, was published in The New York Times on April 10, 1932. He wrote more than forty books of poetry, prose and drama, including Before the Brave (1936), First Will and Testament (1939) and Journal of Albion Moonlight (1941), a prose work. In 1942, he published The Dark Kingdom in a limited edition of seventy-five copies and painted each cover individually in water color. For more than thirty years, Patchen lived with a severe spinal ailment that caused him almost constant physical pain. The weight of this personal battle was compounded by his sensitivity to greater issues of humanity, and his poetry paid special attention to the horrors of war. With his work he tried to create a kind of sanctuary for the reader, apart from reality, where larger-than-life characters were motivated by their loving and benevolent natures. Kenneth Patchen died in 1972. Signed by Author(s).

Vintage two-color flyer, advertising a performance by The Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop with Kenneth Patchen, held on March 16 and March 20, 1959 at The Living Theatre. Charles Mingus first conceived of the jazz workshop in 1951, in the hopes of fostering the exchange of ideas and encouraging varied forms of composition among jazz musicians. After moving to New York in 1951 Mingus began to develop the workshop with a loose group of rotating musicians, creating both new compositions and innovative interpretations of standards. By 1953 he had organized a series of jazz workshop concerts at the Putnam Central Club in Brooklyn, with early participants that included Max Roach, Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, and Art Blakey. After Mingus' death in 1979, Mingus' wife would continue to create workshops with the original Mingus Dynasty quintet and septets, the Mingus Big Band, and the Mingus Orchestra, and the workshops continue to this day. An integral influence on both the San Francisco Renaissance and the Beat Generation, poet and novelist Kenneth Patchen was a creative polymath, exploring various forms of multimedia artwork throughout his career. In 1959 Patchen spent two weeks with Mingus in New York, culminating in the performances announced in the flyer on offer. 8.5 x 13 inches. With a closed tear on the top right, archivally repaired on the verso, else Near Fine.

The poem measures 61 x 45 cm. Kenneth Patchen sent it out for The Christmas holiday and is accompanied by a long 40-line letter he wrote to Larry Lake, publisher of Mano-Mano (Bowery Press), dated June 2, 1971 (in original hand addressed envelope), with his Palo Alto address. In this letter he says things have become a bit scrambled regarding permission to have his work quoted in Mano-Mano. He refers to his letter of January 20, [1971] where he says "you wrote us a letter in which you say." here he quotes what Larry Lake had written about the proposed issue and Lake's note that he plans to dedicate it to him and list all his works. He also notes that his wife [Miriam] had sent a note of thanks and granted permission. Note: here we have the original letter of 20 lines from Miriam dated January 24, 1971 (also in original hand-addressed envelope in which she beautifully expresses her thanks for his desire to honor her husband but inexplicably she writes: "of course you have permission for quotations from Kenneth's work" with the provision that he gives credit to New Directions. Sincerely, Miriam Patchen". Our surmise is that the reason Larry Lake returned the original letter from Miriam the Patchens was to explain why he had begun to go ahead with the project with the assumption full permission was granted. With this background Kenneth Patchen's letter continues: "I would not have. could not have granted anyone permission to do an "anthology" presentation of my work: [the legal] rights here are in the possession of New Directions. And they can be very rough with anyone who infringes upon them. "They Keep Riding Down All the Time", though presently out of print is fully protected by copyright. This fall or next spring New Directions will publish it in a volume with several other shorter pieces of mine. It is their plan to restore all my out-of-print titles to print again. Enclosed is a "Christmas Greeting" [see note on broadside] You may put it in your magazine if you like. It's the only unprinted thing of mine which I have on hand. Hope it serves. Also sending you a copy of a new book which lists all New Directions things to date. Miriam and my best to Karlyn & you. Sincerely yours, Kenneth Patchen. (He adds a P.S.) "My back has been giving me particular hell these past months." The third item is from Miriam on Patchen Cards, No. 221 dated September 25, 1971, and handwritten (though mailed to Kenneth Lake) noting: "Mano-Mano just arrived. How very moving! Beautiful. Both of us are deeply stirred. Thank You. Stuart Perkoff's wish that some of the pain might be eased by his love. Oh my, yes. It does indeed ease it much. People are beautiful. The world is beautiful. Thank you, Dear Friends, our black cat, Mr. Sitwell, greets Bowery Press's Black Cat.

In this long and substantive letter written from Hollywood to his wife, Patchen writes about an offer by composer Harry Geller (1913-2008) to compose a libretto for an opera Geller would write. Patchen shares the assurances he received about Geller with his wife. Patchen writes that working with Geller could be a "real break" for them. He fills the letter with news of his work, rain that would drive crowds from his readings, "bkstore imprints" and "Doris Duke" who hadn't seen the "letter sent to Foundation."
