Descripción: Ediciones Dos Amigos, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1997. One of 25 copies, but each copy unique, all printed on cream Velin d'Arches paper. Etchings and aquatints by Gabriela Aberastury, this copy one of the publisher's copies, unnumbered, but signed in white pencil by the artist, Gabriela Aberastury, the printer, Rubin Lapolla, and one of the publishers, Samuel Cesar Palui. Page size: 13-1/4 inches x 10 inches; 176pp; each page an original print - and many times several different print processes. Bound: loose in original black wrappers with Hebrew letter (Aleph) engraved in silver gilt on front panel and spine, housed in gray cloth over boards clamshell box with original etching on front of box, title printed in black on the spine, box a bit dinged at edges, book fine. Started in 1984 and finished 13 years later under the direction of Samuel Cesar Palui and printed by Ruben R. Lapolla. Samuel Cesar Palui and Ernesto Lowenstein published this book to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Jorge Luis Borges in 1999. The artwork was created by Gabriela Aberastury who editioned all the prints. Rather than illustrate the text story by story, Aberastury chose to explore and reveal the Borgesian universe. She used different techniques: oil, acrylic, lacquer, engraving, gofrado, pencil working with the typographer / printer Ruben Lapolla to create pages that appear to have no beginning and no end - that seem not to have been created but rather revealed. One does not read it as completely enter another realm and experience it with several senses. The text is printed using linotype with gold, silver, copper and black used to create contrasts when the coloring of the paper required it. Truly a masterpiece of book arts, it resembles no other book we've seen. See an Image.

The Dedication Copy Of This Landmark Title Story. First edition. Original pictorial wrappers showing very light use. [Helft p.74; Becco 46], 8vo, The inscription in English reads: "To Mandie from your lazy friend / Jorge Luis Borges - 1951". Nine tales reappear in this collection, all revised & corrected for this edition. Hombre de la esquina rosada, Borges points out, was written influenced by American movies & Robert Louis Stevenson. Emma Zunz "está redactada con palabras opacas, in a style of scrupulous meanness, como dijo Joyce de sus Dubliners. (it is written with opaque words], as Joyce had said about his Dubliners). Funes el memorioso "es el que menos me desagrada." (is the one that least despleases me). Its source is De Quincey's Palimpsest. Borges wrote it when he felt cornered by the universe: "me sentí acosado del universo".La espera is an urban tale, from a true police report read to Borges by his friend Alfredo Doblas.La form a de la espada & Tema del traidor y del héroe pretend to show a romantic view of Ireland. El jardín de los senderos que se bifurcan is a type of crime fiction. Borges hopes that the meaning of it will not come to the reader until the very last paragraph. La muerte y la brújula takes place in Buenos Aires, in spite of the Nordic or German street names. The volume is dedicated to: Mandie Molina Vedia, one of Borges' great, life long loves. Descripción: Editorial Losada, Colección Prosistas de España y América, Buenos Aires, 1949. 1st Edition. Inscribed by Borges to his 'love', Amanda Molina Vedia, to whom he dedicated his landmark 'La Muerte y la brújula' [Death And The Compass] in 1951. First edition. A near fine or better example. Seldom seen in this condition in the original printed wrappers. The presentation inscription penned in English reads: "Dear Mandie / Happy Xmas with best greetings from / Jorge Luis Borges / 1951, Buenos Aires - / What if this friend happened to be God?". [Helft p.72; Becco 37], 8vo, Front cover vignette by Attilio Rossi. In Borges' own words: "Ficciones y El Aleph (1949 y 1952) son, según creo, mis libros más importantes". (Autobiografía pp.111-112). The Borgean quest for the Verb, the Word, which is all words, for the absolute Book, which is al l books, takes flesh in El Aleph: the One that contains All, exemplified in the last tale of this collection. On page 139 Borges begins to expand upon his vision through the Aleph he has found in the cellar of Carlos Argentino Danieri. "En ese insta nte gigantesco, he visto millones de actos deleitables o atroces; ninguno me asombró como el hecho de que todos ocuparan el mismo punto, sin superposición y sin transparencia". (In this gigantic instant, I saw millions of acts, delightful or cruel; none astonished me more than the fact that they all occupied the same place, without superposition or transparency "Borges enumerates 37 points in all, each beginning with "vi " (I saw ): "Vi el populoso mar - Vi el alba y la tarde Vi las muchedumb res de América - Vi un laberinto roto (era Londres) Marvelous Presentation Copy. Descripción: Proa, imprenta El Inca, Buenos Aires, 1925. 1st Edition. Inscribed to the great Spanish author Ramón Gomez de la Serna First edition. 8vo. A very good or better example in the original light blue wrappers - name erasure on the ffe. [Helft p.28; Becco 50], "Para el amigo y colega Ramón Gomez de la Serna / con el agradecimiento de / Jorge Luis Borges. Buenos Aires 1925" [For the friend & colleague Ramon Gomez of the Serna, with the gratefulness of Jorge Luis Borges. Buenos Aires 1925]. This is Borges' first collection of essays. The publication was limited to 500 copies & it was never reissued. Inquisiciones already contains the seminal concerns that Borges would follow for the rest of his writing life. It was never reprinted, however Borges followed it with Otras Inquisiciones, his most important collection of essays. In Inquisiciones, Borges is firmly rooted in two traditions, both classic & modern. The first is Hispanic, from Quevedo "perfecto en las metáforas, en las antítesis, en la adjetivación, es decir, en aquellas disciplinas de la literatura cuya felicidad o malandanza es discernible por la inteligencia" (perfect in metaphores, in antithesis, in adjectivation, that is to say, in those disciplines of literature whose felicitous or erroneous usage is discernable by the in tellect), & Torre Villaruel to Unamuno, Herrera Reissig, & Ramón Gómez de la Serna & Cansinos Asséns. The second tradition is Anglo-Saxon, from Thomas Browne " un ensayo bastante malo, tal vez el primero que se escribió sobre él en idioma español". ( a rather bad essay - perhaps the first that was written about him in Spanish) [Autobiografía, p.80]) to Joyce, including the idealist philosophy of Berkeley. The Germanic tradition is also present with a translation of 3 poems: "Soy culpable de la españilización de los versos". (I am guilty of the Spanish translation of these verses). It is in "Examen de metáforas" where Borges manifests the formulation of his own rhetoric which governed his writing through his Ultraist years to his later wo rks. However years later he retracts this essay: "basta un solo buen verso no metafórico para probar que la metáfora no es un elemento esencial Otro (ensayo) casificaba las metáforas como si se pudiera prescindir sin problema de otros elementos poét icos, por ejemplo el ritmo y la música". (A single good verse without a metaphor is sufficient to prove that the metaphor is not an essential element. Another (essay) classified metaphors as if one could do away with other poetic elements without any problem, rhythm and music, for example). [Autobiografía, p.80]. An extraordinary Copy. Descripción: Editorial Sur, Buenos Aires, 1944. 1st Edition. Inscribed by Borges to his close friend, one of the important Argentine poets, Vicente Barbieri. First edition. 8vo., 203pp, frontispiece portrait by Marie Elisabeth Wrede. A very good copy in the original blue wrappers - small surface chip at the spine crown, contents darkened as always due to paper acidity. [Helft p.65; Becco 30]. The presentation inscription reads: "Para el colega Vicente Barbieri con sincera amistad. / Jorge Luis Borges - 1944", [For the colleague Vicente Barbieri with sincere friendship] 3000 copies of this edition were printed. El jardin de los cenderos que se bifurcan is the predecessor of this, one of the most important works of fiction of the 20th century. It is sufficient to quote Borges' own statement: "F icciones y El Aleph (1949 y 1952) son, según creo, mis libros más importantes". (Ficciones and El aleph are, I believe, my most important books). (Autobiografía p.111-112). The universe created by Borges' work is an alternative postulate of reality which, in many ways, influenced Foucault, Derrida, Paul de Man, Gerard Genette, Umberto Eco, John Updike, Goddard, Bertolucci, to mention a few from the European camp. We must also include the Barranquilla group and other Latin American writers, i.e ., Lezama Lima, Roa Bastos, Onetti, Cortázar, Sábato, and others. Contains 8 stories from the previously published El jardin + a group of 6 new stories entitled, including "Funes, the Memorious" & "Death and the Compass". Which was dedicated to Amanda Molina Vedia. Descripción: Proa, imprenta El Inca, Buenos Aires, 1925. 1st Edition. Inscribed by Borges to the important Argentine writer, Nora Lange. First edition, A very good copy with some general foxing - modern cloth, gilt lettered red spine labels [originally issued only in paperback]. [Helft p.28; Becco 50], 8vo, Buenos Aires, Proa, imprenta El Inca, 1925 The presentation inscription to Lange (Oliverio Girondo's wife) in his fastidious early hand reads: "a la aureolada Nora, muy / cordialmente - / Georgie". A note in pencil below the inscriptions apparently written by Nora Lange's sister; reads in translation: "He could not have found a better adjective for you." Borges used his affectionate diminutive "Georgie", only with his Mother & other close family & friends. This is Borges' first collection of essays. Descripción: Sur, Buenos Aires, 1942. Softcover. First Edition. Borges' first major work of fiction, "The Garden of the Forking Paths." This is the first publication of these stories later published in his acclaimed volume Ficciones, in 1944. Inscribed by Borges to his sister, Norah, and her son: "Para Norah y Miguel, con el cari o y la simpatía de/ Jorge Luis Borges." Norah Borges illustrated her brother's first book of poems, Luna de Enfrente, in 1923. Miguel added his ownership signature to this book in 1995; wrappers slightly darkened, particularly along the spine; front joint professionally reinforced; a very good copy of this extremely fragile, and extremely important volume, in the pale blue wrappers typical of Sur publications of the time. Borges's fictions -- of which these are the first manifestation to be published in a book -- were arguably the most influential literary writings of the 20th century, bringing the sensibilities and experimentation of the avant garde to mainstream literature, and expanding the possibilities of fiction for all the succeeding generations of his literary descendants. An attractive copy and scarce thus, and virtually unheard of as an association copy, particularly such a close familial one. In an attractive quarter leather custom clamshell box. Descripción: Ediciones Dos Amigos, Buenos Aires, 1983. First Edition thus, one of 30 Roman-numeralled copies only, all on Richard de Bas hand-made white paper, each signed in pen by the author, Jorge Luis Borges, and the designer / publisher, Samuel Cesar Palui. Page size: 9-3/4 x 6-1/4 inches; 58pp. Bound by Maria Sol Rebora: full fawn-colored goatskin with onlays of three shades of cream, plus tan and black morocco, each applied in vertical bands of irregular widths, with gilt fillets tooled horizontally at irregular widths, the title in gilt on a smooth spine, fawn colored morocco doublures with vertical gilt fillets at irregular widths on the front and rear flyleaves, signed in gold gilt on lower rear turn-in, Sol Rebora," top edge gilt, headbands of fawn colored and gold gilt thread, white Japan paper guards with gold gilt threads in the paper, original wrappers bound in, housed in quarter goatskin clamshell box of gray goatskin with title and author stamped in gold gilt on spine and edges, with gilt fillets running length of spine, and gray paper over boards, fine. Sol Rebora has designed and executed an especially elegant binding for this beautiful book from Ediciones Dos Amigos. The design is deceptively simple as she has used vertical and horizontal lines at irregular distances to form a strong architectural image. A further integral part of the design is her use of the grains of the morocco placed in contrast to one another to create visual depth on a flat surface. Maria Sol Rebora began her studies in fine bookbinding in 1996 in her native Argentina. She has since studied binding with Betsy Palmer and Deborah Evetts and design with Monique Lallier, Edwin Heim, Jean-Luc Honneger and Jan Sobota, as well as at the Centro del bel Libro, Ascona. Her work is currently featured in the 100th Anniversary Exhibition of the Guild of Book Workers, a juried exhibition. Included in this collection of Jorge Luis Borges poems, known as "Milongas," is a previously unknown Milonga, titled "Unfaithful." Borges has also added a new Prologue and Afterward to this collection of poetry for. In the Afterwood, he thanks the artist, publisher, and printer for their work in bringing this book to life. Under the direction of Samuel Cesar Palui, one of the "Dos Amigos," this edition was hand set and printed letterpress in Kluekens 12pt. in two colors, black for the text and red for the running heads, initial letters, and page numbers, by Ruben and Claudio Lapolla. The four aquatints by Ms. Moncalvo were pulled with the assistance of Mirta Ripoll; all are sepia and black. Combined with Ms. Rebora's classically beautiful binding, the reader / viewer sees a true livre de peintre in the French tradition with a decidedly "New World" emphasis and twist. Borges' poems, known as "Milongas," were frequently set to the music of the tango and have contributed greatly to the cultural life of Argentina. This copy is about as beautiful contemporary book as one could hope to find. See an Image. Nº de ref. de la librería 9888

Descripción: Buenos Aires, Editorial Tor, 1935. Soft cover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Borges, Jorge Luis. Historia universal de la infamia. Buenos Aires, Editorial Tor, 1935. Small 4to. 139 + [5]p. Publisher’s wrappers; front cover with author and title imprint in black and blue within blue line border; partly uncut. First edition of Borges’ first published work of fiction. It marks the beginning of his quest for a new genre to be known as ‘magic realism’. The distorted stories about known figures of notoriety were originally serialized in the coloured supplement of the weekly paper Critica. Borges falsified the tales of others, describing his stories as ‘pointedly picturesque narrative exercises’. With source and content indexes at end. Author’s presentation copy with signed autograph dedication in ink on recto of flyleaf: ‘Para Raquel Adler, cordialmente Georgie’. An interesting literary association copy: the Argentine poetess María Raquel Adler (born 1901), was an early friend of Borges who was known to intimates and family as ‘Georgie’, an anglicisation of ‘Jorge’. Wrappers with minimal traces of wear only, some light foxing at beginning and end, otherwise a very good copy, partially uncut and unopened. Becco 25; Helft pp42, 151, 156, 159, 163, 166, 176, 192. Inscribed by Author(s). Nº de ref. de la librería ABE-11819318334

Illustrated with 18 full-page engravings as follows: 3 by Gabriela Aberstury, 3 by Julio Pagano, 3 by Mirta Ripoll, 8 by Alicia Scavino, and a portrait of the artist by Raul Russo. Hand set in 14pt. The book was started in 1984 and was not published until 1987. This elaborate edition is one of the most beautiful of the press and, in my opinion, the most beautiful edition of Borges' great collection of short stories. The images so capture the author's imagination, particularly the engravings for "El Acercamiento a Almotasim" and "Las Ruinas Circulares." See an Image. Nº de ref. de la librería 9779

Descripción: Editorial Troquel, Colección Diálogos del Presente, Number 5, Buenos Aires, 1955. 1st Edition. From A Great Poet To a Great Poet About A Great Poet. Inscribed by Borges to his close friend, the Argentine poet, Vicente Barbieri. First edition. A fine fresh copy in the original printed wrappers. [Helft p.77; Becco 105], 8vo, "Para Vicente Barbieri, afectos y un abrazo. Jorge Luis Borges" [For Vicente Barbieri, affections & a hug. Jorge Luis Borges]. Leopoldo Lugones (1874-1938) was a journalist & short-story writer. His poetical work reflects the Spanish American modernist movement headed by Ruben Darío, i.e., Lunario sentimental, (1909) & Romancero (1924). To Borges, Lugones represented his Argentinian side - finding the paths of his own literature by opposing Lugones' Baroque style with a more Classical stance, in which real ity is always a provisional postulate. Borges returned to Lugones again & again. A Great Literary Association Copy. Nº de ref. de la librería 21189
