Hardcover. Condición: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Player Move Diagrams Ilustrador. 2nd. This little volume on early NZ Rubgy, and advice on how the game could be better played, has become something of a treasure to collectors of books on the code. This second edition is not dated by probably c1929. Early text concentrates on the development of the game in the 1880s and Dunedin and the Otago sides provide the book's focus point. As the sub-title states the author is generous with his "Some Hints and Criticisms." Chapter One is devoted to the "Criticisms" and the author's account of a number of international and top level encounters provide the platform for his comments. "Hints" come in Chapter Two which carries the title "The Game, The Meaning of it: How to play It.'" Here all fectors of the game. and players, are considered with his hints of game skills and tactics explained in simple diagramatic form as well as in the text. The final chapter is headed "Reflections" and contains the author's opinions of the game, observations on it, predictions and prospects, plus commonts on its administration and administrators. "Criticisms" are also found in the "Refections" chapter and one on refereeing is typicat, stating:: " At the present day refereeing is very bad. For many years we have had butr one good referee in Dunedin, and he naturally has not been a 'persiona grata.' Referees from abroard have not made me think the position in Dunedin is exceptional." In his section "The Press and the Game" the author wrote: "Reporters of football (in the past) knew the game, understood how it should be played, and recognised the very definite gulf which often lies between merit and successs. They understood the vaulue of true amateurism and regarded the pot hunter with a proper abhorrance. This was before the days of American 'boost' and optimism; at a time when teams of footballers were not regarded as advertisers of cigarettes, boots etc, before they had been named 'our real ambassadors.' " Throughout this thoughtful litte book there are observations and some uncanny predictions. This second edition of the book is not dated but references in the text indicate it would have been the late 1920s or very early' 30s and it thus reviews the history of the first 50 years of the game in NZ. 129 pages including index, illustrated with frontis portrait of Pat Keogh, described by the author as "The most brilliant New Zealand player of my time", nine b/w photos, numerous small positional and movement diagrams. Light brown hard covers with black front titles are VG+, light bumps to front corners, light brusisng at spine extremities, faded ink name etc of original owner on front pastedown, with tiny ink name at top and top edge FFEP, text block in excellent condition throughout. A top-notch copy of this rugby classic.
