Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. H. G. Wells meant "A Modern Utopia" to reflect his idea of what an ideal future state might look like. There is racial and sexual equality, but beyond that , from my perspective, there is much in the novel that conjures doubt as to the actual 'utopian reality' of the world Wells envisages. Such a closely structured and ordered "Samurai" culture as Wells descibes, seems a bit too much order and not enough freedom so that A Modern Utopia is actually A Modern Dystopia but maybe I am nitpicking. The novel was very influential on the thinking of a generation of young intellectuals (and even a charge of engendering sexual promiscuity was laid at Wells's feet). *********************************************** Here is the blurb on the back cover; "A MODERN UTOPIA is one of the first important blueprints for the modern welfare state and an early major statement of Well's idea of the World State (only an entire world could facilitate such an endeavor, said Wells). the idea of the World State is perhaps his greatest contribution to the intellectual history of the Twentieth Century. In this 'quintessential utopia', as Lewis Mumford calls it, Wells 'sums up and clarifies the utopias of the past, and brings them into contact with the world of the present.' This Bison Books edition, with an introduction by Mark R. Hillegas, brings back into print a work that has stimulated three generations of thinkers. *********************************************** TITLE : A Modern Utopia / AUTHOR : H. G. Wells / INTRODUCTION : Mark R. Hillegas / IMPRINT Bison books (University of Nebraska) / PLACE : Lincoln, Nebraska / DATE : Undated / EDITION : [9th Bison Book printing after the initial 1967 printing] / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade paperback; Contains an Introduction and a brief Bibliography; xxvi + 393 pages; pictorial wraps, perfect-bound (paper covers, glued) ******************************************* CONDITION : NEAR FINE with near-negligible wear (slight bumps to cover corner tips) - still all things considered - very nice.

Blue-grey Cloth. Condición: Near Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First. Blue-Grey Cloth. Near Very Good/Good. Hardback. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 200 pages; 8 p. index; 2 p. bibliography (Science fiction and Utopian fantasy) and many Chapter notes (citations); from the dj: "Because the better practicioners of anti-utopian fiction (Orwell, Huxley, Capek, etc.) are all indebted to Wells's world view and fertile imagination, the first half of the author's study concerns itself with the part of Wells's work that exhibits his preoccupation with the future. Dr. Hillegas shows how later writers took from Wells not only form and structure, but also an incredible number of images, details, and features of plot, .then discusses the literary descendants of these (Wells's) tales.Next he examines numerous anti-utopia and apocalyptic stories by both science-fiction writers and others usually considered more in the mainstream (Bradbury, A. Burgess, Vonnegut, etc.). In his epilogue the author produces evidence of an even more recent revival of utopianism." Book condition: Cover shows some fade on the top and bottom extreme edges, and adjacent the spine cover; top edge shows a very light sprinkling of foxing, the bottom has one larger spot; dj has three 0.5 inch-long edge tears and additional minor wear on the edges. Contents are VG.
