No Binding. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Boxed portfolio of 44 loose glossy black and white pages featuring India?s iconic architecture. 11.5 x 14 inches. #225 of second edition of 2000, 1977. The pages contain photographs, plans and text. Very good plus condition; box corners are split. Stamp on inside of box cover from John Russell Architects of Ontario. Nick to paper on front of box, top of box partially faded. The photographs are based on a three-month tour of the architecture of northwestern India by the author/photographer Klaus Herdeg in 1965, the purpose of which was ?the illustration and explication of a number of formal structures [and] a contribution towards the general knowledge of Indian architecture.? The trip was sponsored by Cornell and Columbia Universities and the Rhode Island School of Design, and the work was part of an exhibition in 1967. The buildings and monuments photographed and described include: Modhera Temple and Reservoir ? believed by many to be the finest example in India; Kapadvanj Village Reservoir; Adalaj Step-Well; Jaisalmer City Mansion; Surkhej Mortuary Complex; Mandu Great Mosque and Royal Tombs; Mandu Palace of Sultan Baz Bahadur; and Fatehpur Sikri City and Citadel. The AIA calls Herdeg?s work a ?seminal folio.? It is particularly noteworthy in that Herdeg was the first to recognize India?s historic stepwells as monuments of architectural significance. These neglected structures, which were utilitarian water collection systems as well as gathering places for cultural and religious purposes, are today still magnificent in their structure and ornamentation. (Umberto Dindo, AIA). The images offer an important record of these architecturally significant monuments as they were almost 50 years ago.
