Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition. One of 200 copies printed by the Strawberry Hill Press; Porchester/Munson Havens' copy. Hazen (1973); #11, pp. 68-72., 1973. Size of binding: 7 ¾ in. x 10 in., frontispiece is a fold-out engraving of the Oliver painting of Herbert of Cherbury, engraved by Anthony Walker (1726-65); title-page with engraved vignette of Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill; Dedication to the Earl of Powis; Advertisement. Pp. [i]-[x], pp. [1]-171. Bound in full, mottled, 18th century calf, with five raised bands on the spine, with five spine compartments with gilt floral design tooling, and a red leather title label reading: LIFE OF LD. HERBERT; single line gilt borders around the front & back covers, gilt designs on cover edges, early marbled paper endpapers, dark green silk ribbon bookmarker bound in (this has left some tanning at gutter of pp. 148-149). These age-related defects are noted: lower front & back cover corners are bumped, general edge wear to the cover edges, spine ends, hinges at spine, covers show some wear (abrasions) to the leather surface; small ink spot to book fore-edge, 2 in. tear to fore-edge/page margin of pp. 155-156, some tanning to book edges, tan spotting to flyleaves. With the engraved, heraldic Porchester ("Ung Je Serviray") bookplate on the front paste-down, & pasted shelf numbers: P c 27; the facing marbled endpaper has the Havens' bookplate, reading: Munson Havens and Hetty Ganson Havens Their Book (featuring a silhouette of a couple seated in rocking chairs & reading). This is completely unrestored, or cleaned copy from the personal collection of Rowfant Club member & author, Munson Havens (1873-1942), who wrote: "Horace Walpole and the Strawberry-Hill Press 1757-1789", published as the first book of the Kirgate Press, in 1901. Havens, among other book-collecting interests, collected the publications of the Strawberry Hill Press, this is one of the few from his personal collection which is now available. The scan shows the spine & front cover. Havens' lists this famous title at page 77 of his book as: "1764 Life of Edward, Lord Hebert of Cherbury. Small quarto. 200 copies printed.", and says at p. 40 of his work: Prat also printed a short Life of Lord Herbert of Cherbury, written by himself, a quarto, which Walpole declared to be by far the most curious and entertaining book that his press had produced. It was the thing most in fashion; people were mad after it, he believed because only two hundred were printed.

4to. pp. 4 p.l., 272. complete with half-title. A fine large copy, bound in full red straight-grained morocco by Lewis, gilt back & inside dentelles, all edges gilt (spine sunned). First Edition of this treatise on education, published from an anonymous manuscript in the Bodleian Library and attributed to Lord Herbert of Cherbury. The essay deals chiefly with the need of reforming religious instruction in accordance with the religious theories set forth by Herbert in the De Religione Gentilium (1663). ".the pupil is advised to start with reason before proceeding to a faith that is clear and evident to all mankind. What proceeds from reason leads to truth, but what proceeds from faith leads only to belief. Virtue is extolled as the fundamental part of worship, along with contrition for sins committed." (Mossner, Encyc. of Philosophy) Rand I 257.
