Reprint, stapled. Condición: Gut. pp. 96-115. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Name of the author handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: "The story (mýthos) is Egyptian. Egyptians are extraordinarily wise. So perhaps this story, even though it is only a story, might hint at something more than a story because it is Egyptian. If it is less a story than a sacred discourse (lógos . ierós), all the more should it be written down." Thus reads the opening paragraph of Book 1 of Synesius Egyptian Tale or de providentia, a tale that hints indeed at a great deal more than a story. De providentia is a work of fiction in which the author used the famous myth of Isis and Osiris as an allegory, allegedly of divine worldgovernment, but actually as a thinly disguised tale of betrayal, cowardice, corruption and the military - in short, a very human tale about power. - Wikipedia: Susanna K. Condición: Gut. S. 345-363, 2 Abb. - Wikipedia: Susanna K. Elm (* 11. Reprint. Condición: Gut. pp. 3-20. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to Hildegard Temporini-Gräfin Vitzthum. - Name of the author handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: The end of the fourth and beginning of the fifth century A.D., a period also known as the Theodosian Age, witnessed the rapid evolution of a new Christian-Roman civilization that we call Byzantine. This evolution manifested itself in the creation of new models of identity, power and authority, that of the bishop prominent among them. The process of creating the "model bishop" was dominated by several distinct individuals, who combined in their writings existing concepts of political theory, forms and language of administrative and legal office, expressions of social status and various epistemological approaches towards doctrine. The result was the formulation of a new figure of ecclesiastical authority - the imperial bishop. During the fifth century, the most prominent of the men who embodied the new model became known as "Fathers of the Church." The process of establishing the new model of episcopal authority was long, protracted and highly contested, involving numerous players from a variety of walks of life. In this essay, I will illustrate some of the mechanisms involved in the invention of the "Father of the Church" by concentrating on one figure, Gregory of Nazianzus. I will show how in his "Farewell Address to the Bishops" he combined Roman administrative and legal procedure with his own doctrinal tenets to exert his authority over Nectarius, his successor as bishop of Constantinople, and the bishops assembled in the imperial capital during one of the high-points of "orthodox" history, the first ecumenical council of 381. I am especially grateful that I have been given the opportunity to do so in honor of Kaspar Elm, a beloved father who could not have been invented any better. - Wikipedia: Susanna K. Gr.-8°, Ln. m. SU. XIII, 506 S. Neuwertiges Ex. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This collection of essays offers a series of rigorously focused art-historical, historical, and philosophical studies that examine ways in which materiality has posed and still poses a religious and cultural problem. The volume examines the material agency of objects, artifacts, and environments: art, ritual, pilgrimage, food, and philosophy. It studies the variable 'senses' of materiality, the place of materiality in the formation of modern Western religion, and its role in Christianity's dialogue with non-Western religions. The essays present new interpretations of religious rites and outlooks through the focus on their material components. They also suggest how material engagement theory - a new movement in cultural anthropology and archeology - may shed light on the cultural history of Christianity in medieval and early modern Europe and the Americas. It thus fills an important lacuna in the study of western religion by highlighting the longue durée, from the Middles Ages to the Modern Period, of a current dilemma, namely the divide between materialistic and what might broadly be called hermeneutical or cultural-critical approaches to religion and human subjectivity. 276 pp. Englisch.
