This is a collection of 8 adventure stories, set during the Napoleonic campaigns and featuring Brigadier Etienne Girard. Doyle considered his portrayals of the French soldiers of the period to be accurate even down to the smallest details of their uniforms and of the historical background. Contains: How the Brigadier Came to the Castle of Gloom; How the Brigadier Slew the Brothers of Ajaccio; How the Brigadier Held the King; How the King Held the Brigadier; How the Brigadier Took the Field Against the Marshal Millefleurs; How the Brigadier Played for a Kingdom; How Brigadier Gerard Won His Medal; How the Brigadier was Tempted by the Devil. This copy appears to have been reprinted from the plates of the second printing of the 1896 Appleton edition. The lettering on the spine of the book has been rubbed. The front cover includes an illustration of a soldier in green gilt and black. The text pages are clean and bright. The book includes 16 black and white full page illustrationsby W. B. Wollen (the one listed for opposite page 8 is actually used as the frontispiece. The inner spine hinges have been strengthened and partly repaired. Included are 10 pages of advertisements at the rear of the book. "Adventures of Gerard (The Adventures of Gerard in some editions) is a volume collecting 8 short stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle first published on 22 september 1903 by George Newnes Ltd.
