The artist, James Pattison Cockburn (1779?-1847), was born into a military family and himself received military training at the Royal Military Academy in England, where he was trained in drawing and topography. Cockburn had a long military career and retired with the rank of Major-General. His time in the army took him to many parts of the world, where he sketched and produced a steady flow oftravel books that he illustrated himself. They include A Voyage to Cadiz and Gibraltar, with 30 colored plates (1815); Swiss Scenery, with 62 plates (1820); The Route of the Simplon (1822); The Valley of Aosta (1823); and the present work, Pompeii Illustrated (1827). Cockburn also spent several years in Canada from 1822 to 1832, where he produced some of his most highly regarded work. He finished his career as the director of the laboratory of the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, England, where he died. The author of the accompanying descriptions, Thomas Leverton Donaldson (1795-1885), was a British architect, notable as a pioneer in architectural education, a co-founder and President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA),and a winner of RIBA'sRoyal Gold Medal in 1851. William Bernard Cooke (1778-1855), the engraver of Cockburn s original artwork for the present volume, was an English line engraver, especially remembered for his landscapes and marine views. Book.
