Containing a concise view of Their Lives and Characters, their Principles, Sufferings, and Printed Works." The Act of Uniformity of 1662 forced roughly 2000 ministers from the Church of England for not being ordained by a bishop. Nonconformists (those who did not attend the Church of England) were denied public services and also disallowed from holding certain public offices. These books commemorate their lives and struggles, organizing those descriptions by geographic region.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. This is a Very Good Two Volume set in Original Full Tan Calf with some rubbing and wear to outer boards, with some small chipping to headbands at head of spine.Bindings are holding frim with no hinge weakness, knoicked corners as you expect.Their are five raised bands to spine each gilt ruled with volumes I and 2 in gilt numbering to 3rd down compartment of the spine, with faded inner gilr edging to boards. This comprehensive work was first undertaken by Edmund Calamy and this set is abridged and corrected by Palmer with the author's additions inserted and with many further particulars and new anecdotes,to which is added an Introduction containing a brief history of the Times in which they lived, and the grounds of their Nonconformity.Included is a preface dated 1774,a 14 page list of original subscribers,Index and a list for binder's cuts (ie where to lay in the engraved plates of those head of the various divines.this two volume set is complete with 25 steel engravings within Volume One and one further engraving of 'Thomas Warren' in Volume Two.Both volumes have one previous ink name of a former owner to the front pastedowns. The text remains clean part from minor browning spots to the endpapers and pre-lims.This book, first published in 1775, is an extensively-revised version, by another dissenting minister Samuel Palmer, of materials originally collated and published by Edmund Calamy, commemorating the lives and works of these ejected ministers.Editing the autobiography of one of the most eminent of these ejected ministers, Richard Baxter, Calamy included a long chapter listing the ejected ministers and such biographical data as he could find. This is the famous chapter 9 of An Abridgment of Mr Baxter's History of his Life and Times (1702). This chapter became a whole volume of a second edition of the Abridgement published in 1713. And in 1727 Calamy produced a further two volumes of material under the title A Continuation of the Account of the Ministers, Lecturers, Masters and Fellows of Colleges, and Schoolmasters who were Ejected and Silenced after the Restoration of 1660.Samuel Palmer attempted to integrate this material into a more readable form, making extensive revisions and additions. He certainly succeeded in producing something more accessible to eighteenth-century readers and there were several reprints of the book and a second edition in 1802-3.This is the rarer First Edition of this work.Octavo (8vo) Two Volumes,Volume One (xxx) plus Index 551pp Volume Two 648pp Plus at the end of Volume two is added a ' Further English Version of The Latin Epitaphs In The Nonconformist's Memorial' To which is added a poem sacred to the memory of the two thousand Ministers By Thomas Gibbons.
