Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition, first printing. 361 pp. Original cloth. Very Good+, without dust jacket. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 1986 was awarded to James M. Buchanan Jr. 'for his development of the contractual and constitutional bases for the theory of economic and political decision-making.' 'The book was instrumental in the development of 'public choice' as an academic subdiscipline between economics and political science, a subdiscipline that has provided the intellectual foundations for examining 'politics without romance.' Because of its constitutional emphasis, the book provides the starting point for the emerging field of inquiry 'constitutional economics,' a field that has come increasingly to occupy my own research attention' (Buchanan, 'This Week's Citation Classic'; Current Contents, No. 2, Jan. 11, 1988). 'One of the classic works from the discipline of public choice in economics and political science. The analytical approach of the authors is based on methodological individualism collective action is composed of individual actions and on the rejection of any organic interpretation of the state. A purely individualistic conception of collectivity is maintained: the state is an artifact, created by men and thus subject to change and perfection. Buchanan and Tullock maintain that only constitutional changes, which can be shown to be in the interest of all interested parties can be judged as 'improvements' and therefore consider conceptual unanimity as the only legitimate decision-making rule' (Wikipedia).

First edition, first printing. 8vo. x, [2], 361, [1] pp. Original black-grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket (internally clean and unmarked; jacket with short closed tear to head of front joint and some trivial wear to extremities, notwithstanding an excellent example of the rare jacket). Ann Arbor, MI; The University of Michigan Press. One of the great works of twentieth century economics and political science, a foundational text in the discipline of 'public choice', and a major contributor to Buchanan's awarding of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1986 - exceedingly scarce in the dust jacket, which is seldom encountered in anything approaching collectable condition. ?Buchanan and Tullock discuss political institutions in the same manner as the economist discusses the market. They begin with the individual as he participates in the processes through which group choices are organized. Government is treated as a co-operative endeavor on the part of a number of people of differing tastes to increase their abilities to reach the separate objectives. As in economics, the basic question becomes one of efficiency - which set of governmental institutions will best serve the individual ends of the citizens? (jacket). In so doing, the work ?earns its authors the undying enmity of all would-be philosopher kings who had been riding high on the paradigm of market failure. For, with brilliant insight, the two Virginians demonstrate that the failures of private markets. manifest themselves in much more chronic forms in political markets. In this way, they level the intellectual playing field concerning the relative effectiveness of private and political markets in achieving economic efficiency. The book also became the fulcrum for the establishment of the Public Choice Society, a forum through which scholars working in this newly established field could meet on an annual basis to exchange ideas? (Dictionary of American Economists, I, p. 103).

First Edition. "BUCHANAN, James M. and TULLOCK, Gordon. The Calculus of Consent. Logical Foundations of Constitutional Democracy. Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, (1962). Octavo, original gray cloth, original dust jacket. $6200.First edition of this cornerstone of 20th-century economics and political theory, focusing on the concept of "public choice" in government. The Calculus of Consent "is one among a handful of contributions to public choice that can truly be called a classic. It was one of the building blocks laying the foundation for what would become an immense research program falling under the heading of public choice Perhaps the most important and lasting contribution of the book is the introduction of a two-stage process for collective decision-making. In the first, the constitutional stage, the rules of the political game are chosen. In the second, the post-constitutional stage, the 'in-period' political game plays out" (Mueller, "James Buchanan, Gordon Tullock, and 'The Calculus'"). "A watershed moment in the emergence of public choice theory and, more specifically, the constitutional political economy research program. Over the last 50 years, the book has had a remarkable impact not only in economics but also in the neighboring social sciences, philosophy, and law" (Vanberg & Vanberg, "Towards a (re-)integration of the social sciences: The Calculus of Consent at 50"). Book with slight foxing to edges of text block and endpapers, dust jacket with scratch to front panel, light foxing to flaps. and minor wear mainly to extremities. A desirable, extremely good copy, quite scarce in this condition.".

First edition of this landmark work. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly inscribed by both James M. Buchanan and Gordon Tullock on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket that has a few small closed tears. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed first edition. The Calculus Of Consent is one of the classic works from the discipline of public choice in economics and political science. The analytical approach of the authors is based on methodological individualism - collective action is composed of individual actions and on the rejection of any organic interpretation of the state. A purely individualistic conception of collectivity is maintained: the state is an artifact, created by men and thus subject to change and perfection.
