Descripción: Gainesville: Univ. of Florida Press, 1951., 1951. lx,426pp., primarily printed in double columns, plus folding table. Titlepage printed in red and black. Folio. Modern limp vellum in an antique style. Bookplate on rear pastedown. Some slight soiling on the foredge of the textblock, else fine. Originally published in 1723, this is the first English translation of Gonzalez Barcia's essential history of early Florida. The text covers the early explorations of North America north of Mexico and extending to the Pacific Ocean, including the French, British, and Spanish colonies. A considerable portion of the content is devoted to the explorations of Cabeça de Vaca, Coronado, De Soto, and La Salle, and is drawn from manuscript sources no longer extant. Howes calls this work "the principal authority on Florida itself during its two centuries of undisputed Spanish supremacy, 1567-1763." "It is filled with the most valuable material relating to the Indians who once inhabited the vast territory claimed by the Spaniards under the title of Florida" - Field. Printed in an edition of 999 copies (this is copy 91), translated by Anthony Kerrigan and with a foreword by Herbert Bolton. For the 1723 edition: SERVIES 291. FIELD 80. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 723/10. HOWES B130, "b." SABIN 3349. Nº de ref. de la librería WRCAM 48337
