Hardcover. Condición: g to vg. Second edition greatly enlarged. Duodecimo. viii, (2) 140 (1)pp., 38 plates. Original three quarter leather over marbled boards with gilt tooling and gilt lettering on black label of spine. Taupe endpapers. Frontispiece by T. Kelly. "The first edition of this Essay contained notices of Coins only as were in my possession. By the kindness of friends, to whose collections I have since had access, I have now considerably enlarged it, and made what appears to me to be an exceedingly curious and interesting addition, by introducing some of the remains of the Gnostic sects, who formed so distinguished and striking a feature in the early ages of the Christian church. In the voluminous and learned works, indeed, of Bandurius, Du Cange, Vaillant, and others, there are scattered notices of some events alluded to by the Coins, and these notices I have availed myself of, and acknowledged." (Author). Illustrated with 38 plates of one Medal, Gnostic gems and coins by T. Kelly, most of them depicted in an enlarged format with references to the actual size. Addendum and Errata page at rear. Binding with some wear along edges, light scuffing of leather and boards rubbed. Front joint partially cracked, both joints and spine with small chips. Small dealer sticker on inside front cover. Starting after title page. Some sporadic foxing of block throughout. Binding in overall good, interior in good+ to very good condition.

Binding tight; boards with edge wear, corners bumped; moderate foxing internally; see additional images provided. Reverand R. Walsh traveled overland from Rio to Ouro Preto and back. Quoting Borba 934: "Robert Walsh, brother of the Irish poet Edward Walsh, was ordained in 1802 and also took a medical degree in 1820. Walsh was not only a very cultured man, but had traveled widely in other 'underdeveloped' countries and was familiar with cultures other than his own. Thus he attempted to explain the manners and customs of the Brazilians rather than criticize them, and tried to understand them as well as to make the reader appreciate Brazilian culture and the institutions of the young Empire. This approach and his eagerness to learn and observe everything make his book extremely interesting and one of the best about that period. The first 150 pages describe his journey from Portsmouth to Rio via Madeira and the Canaries. He then gives a very interesting r?sum? of Brazil's history from the discovery to the coronation of Pedro I. This r?sum? is not without originality as he relates many details about the time of Jo?o VI and Independence which were told to him by people who witnessed the events. The rest of the first volume is occupied by an extremely accurate description of Rio de Janeiro. The first 300 pages of the second volume contain the account of a journey to the gold mine district. The remainder of the volume is concerned with the slave situation in Brazil, general observations, and an appendix reproducing several documents and a sheet of music with the Imperial anthem composed by Pedro I. Size: 23.5 x 15.5 cm. 0.0.
