Hardcover. 4to. Blue cloth, dust jacket. 192pp. Numerous illustrations. Very good/good plus. Jacket edge-chipped along bottom edge. First edition. Since Shaw's script is easily legible and he also typed many of his letters, much of this correspondence is given strictly in facsimiles of the actual letters rather than in the form of transcripts.

Hardcover, 6" x 9", with dust jacket 288 pages Eleven b&w photographs. Molly Tompkins buttonholed George Bernard Shaw outside his home and was asked in to tea. It was the beginning of a long, emotional relationship between the grand old man and the beautiful, occasionally maddening young actress. Mollie's replies to Shaw's letters have been destroyed and it is interesting that she is nowhere mentioned by any of his biographers, but Shaw's many communications to Molly are intact and here published in full with the intriguing background filled in by Molly's son, Peter. Dust jacket has tears and small gaps. Few spots to endpapers and fore-edge. GOOD book in GOOD unclipped dust jacket.

Each essay focuses on a mysterious persona who appeared to have special powers not easily explained. The spoon-bender, the 18th century founder of the Hell-Fire Club, the sinister monk of Imperial Russia, the "beast" of Black Magic, the astounding inventor who harnessed electricity and other, etc. The facts and myths are presented to the reader without romanticising so you can make up your own mind. From back panel: The occult revival which began in the early 1960's is a reaction against the worst absudities of modern science, its insistence that the univers is meaningless and purposeless, that evolution is a matter of chance, that man must be judged purely as an animal - or worse still, as a bundle of mechanical reflexes.
