The boards are slightly marked. The illustration to the front board is slightly faded. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the very occasional spot. Good. book.

The first part of the book surveys the principal breeds of dog, the second is concerned with breeding, rearing, training and management and the third covers the treatment of diseases. The author acknowledges that his work, which was first published in 1859, was partly based on William Youatt, the Dog. John Henry Walsh (1810-88), surgeon and writer on sport, used the pseudonym, Stonehenge. He also published on the greyhound, the horse, British rural sports and served as Editor of The Field. The book is rubbed at corners and spine ends with 1/4" loss of fabric at both ends. Side of spine have wear. Covers are generally rubbed and edges of pages are tanned. Address and notes on the second endpaper but all other 400 pages are clean and appear tight with no markings with light tanning. Over 100 illustrations help describe the history, rearing, training and care of the dog.

The book features numerous illustrations, marbled end papers, and marbled page edges on all sides. "Comprising the various modes of breaking and using him for hunting, coursing, shooting, etc., and including the points or characteristics of all dogs, which are entirely rewritten." The contents are grouped into two "Books:" "Book I. contains the Natural History of the Dog, with a minute description of the varieties which are generally recognized. Book II. describes the best methods of breeding, rearing, breaking, and managing the dog, while in health, by means of appropriate food, exercise, and lodging." Condition: Some light soiling to the covers; there is a 3" strip at the top-left of the front cover where the green cloth meets the red spine where the cloth has lifted a bit with a couple tears. Tiny cloth tears at the bottom edge of the spine; larger cloth tears at the top edge of the spine. The spine has faded a bit and there are some stains at the bottom half. Small cloth tears at the corner tips. Tight binding with no loose pages. There are insignificant cracks at the front and rear hinges (despite the cracks, both covers are firmly attached and are not shaky). Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only some light foxing at the front up to around page 13, and some light foxing to the last 10 or so pages. There is an inscription written in pen dated 1966 on a blank front end paper. The author's real name is written in pencil above "Stonehenge" on the title page. Overall the book is in Good+ condition.

Boards stained and extremities worn but otherwise a good copy. Early signature at head of title. Illustrated by 30 fine plates, including frontispiece and one double page and by numerous wood engravings throughout text. A classic Victorian sporting manual covering all aspects of sports and games with a particular emphasis on field sports but also covering aquatic sports, boating, swimming, horse racing and the veterinary care of horses and dogs. Among the rural games and outdoor amusements are cricket, archery, curling and skating, riding and driving (carriages). 'Foot-ball' appears in a section entitled 'Minor games with ball,' as 'a game much in vogue in some rural districts, but it is chiefly played at Rugby, and one or two other public schools.' 'Stonehenge' was the pseudonym of John Henry Walsh, FRCS (1810-88) who eventually abandoned his career as a surgeon to become a full time writer on rural sports, especially on horses, dogs and sporting guns. He became editor of The Field in 1857. This second edition appeared in 1856, the same year as the title's first publication.
