No Binding. Condición: Near Fine. No Jacket. Charles Stanley Reinhart (American artist, 1844-1896); Vincent van Gogh [association] Ilustrador. Three leaves (six pages) from the Christmas Edition of The Graphic [large format London-published periodical], 1883, containing a rare large, fine, signed engraving by the American artist Charles Stanley Reinhart and "Paris 85", entitled: "For Those in Peril on the Sea". The image itself measures 18.25 in. by 11.75 in. on two pages, each measuring 15.5 in. by 11.5 in. So the full size of the illustration (outer border edge) measures 31 in. by 23 in. The picture depicts a group of mostly women (most probably French fishing families) on a cliff top, anxiously looking out to sea during stormy weather and gathered around a large crucifix mounted on a stone stepped plinth. A woman in the centre holds a telescope to her eye, steadying herself against the wooden crucifix - a strong symbolic image. The engraving has a STRONG ASSOCIATION WITH VINCENT VAN GOGH who mentions it in a letter dated Nuenen,Tuesday 26th February 1884 as follows: "I haven't got much more in the way of woodcuts this winter. and then a print from the Xmas issue of The Graphic, For those in peril upon [sic] the sea." The engraving is in fine condition although the border is a little marked in places with finger-marks and one very small area of spotting. The reverse sides of the image are printed (no see-through) with a wonderful spread of illustrated adverts and a further leaf carries 2 pages of attractive illustrated adverts, including corsets, bicycles and books. Securely packaged in a strong cardboard tube with FREE INSURED WORLD-WIDE POSTAGE. 50% price reduction applied.
