Bookplate of Dana Jerome Blackwell to front pastedown, and Mr. Blackwell has also inscribed his name in a rather ornate style to the first blank. A small tidemark or dampstain across the top of most pages, to a maximum depth of 5/8ths inches, impinging no text. There is also some rub to edges of the spine covering, but this copy remains firmly bound. Complete with 4 color plates (showing terra cotta figurines, only -- none of the gold, which for some reason is all photographed in B&W) and five foldouts, to include the two topographical ("site maps") at rear.The German-American archaeologist and treasure hunter (having already unearthed Troy) searches for the tomb of Agamemnon near the Lions' Gate at the site of the ancient city of Mycenae. 384 pp. including Index, followed by many plates and plans, some folding.

'It is a spectacular book and was a roaring success. No one could overlook or ignore this book and as much as the discovery of Troy, this book was responsible in my opinion for Schliemann's immediate and lasting international fame' (Runnels). After Schliemann's spectacular discoveries at Troy in 1873 and the ensuing court case brought against him by Turkey, he was prevented from excavating in Troy for several years. In 1876 he turned his attention to Mycenae and carried out excavations on the site from August to November with the resulting discovery of 'Agamemnon's Treasure'. Runnels 1878a; Blackmer 1498.
