An important study of plant structures and the role of cells in plant tissues, partly a preliminary study for his work on the identity of animal and plant cells published in 1837. Dr. Purkinje was remarkable researcher. He was Professor of Physiology at Breslau and Prague, eminent as a physiologist and microscopist. In 1839, he was the first to use the terms plasma and protoplasma. His name was given to the Purkyne phenomenon, or Purkyne shift, and to Purkinye cells, Purkinye fibers, and to Purkyne's vesicle. He has multiple listings in Garrison-Morton 5th ed. " Purkyne was the first to examine the interior of the human eye and the dog eye, using only a candle and a concave spherical lens. He thus invented the opthalmoscope three decades before Helmholtz." - G-M 1492.1. [See Pritzel 7368, 8256; BM Natural History, p. 1623]. This work, illustrated with 18 lithographed plates, is his study of forms of pollen in re physiology.
