Cloth. Condición: Good. H. C. Selous and M. Paolo Priolo Ilustrador. Attractive late Victorian edition of Bunyan's classic. Blue bevelled covers with gilt titling and decoration to upper cover and spine, plus blind-stamped tooling. 400pp with numerous b/w illustrations inc. frontis of Bunyan by W.J.Linton. AEG and edges also carry unusual, blind-stamped decoration. ND, but clearly late 19th Century. Covers have light shelfwear, particularly to extrems, fore edges have modest water damage for approx 1cm and there are a couple of other small, incidenrtal marks. Text bloc is clean and tight, although slightly yellowed with age. No DJ. A decent copy for its age. Heavy book might require extra postage outside UK. Ref:175213.

In quite good half black leather with five raised bands on spine with gilt crown and shield decoration and marble coloured boards. The covers are very tight and straight, fairly clean and with worn appearance, especially to spine ends and corners. Russet coloured end papers, clean; probably not original. Dark brown cut edges. The page block is very tight, lightly foxed throughout, some pages more heavily, e.g. title page and last text pages. With many engravings by H.C. Selous and M. Paolo Priolo. Bound in strong buckram cloth, blind embossed decorations and gilt vignette of the pilgrim on the front board, gilt lettering to spine, bevelled boards, top edge gilt. Boards heavily rubbed all over and especially at corners and spine ends, cloth cracked around spine joints, chapped at spine ends, a few marks. Cracked gutters between endpapers; front endpapers have bookplate of one C W Pittard, and a few pencil notes regarding the volume, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight barring some minor spotting in places. Stunning illustrations. [See Gleeson White, English Illustration, The Sixties, 1855-1870.] A large, heavy volume which will attract an additional charge for overseas delivery.

A lovely illustrated edition of the seventeenth-century English spiritual classic.

"In January 1860, the Council of the Art-Union of London offered a premium of One Hundred Guineas for a series of designs in outline, or outline slightly shaded, illustrative of Mr. Tennyson's poem, "Idylls Of The King." In reply, forty-three sets were submitted, consisting of 540 drawings, and were exhibited publicly for four weeks, with the prizes. After due examination, the Council, awarded the premium to a set of sixteen drawings, which proved to be the work of Mr. Paolo Priolo, resident of Edinburgh." This book consists of the sixteen drawings by Mr. Priolo. This was issued in softcovers, and this book was rebound into plain blue cloth hardcovers, with gilt lettering on the spine. This book was signed by the author Charles Warren Stoddard (Aug.-7-1843 - April 23, 1909), (San Francisco, California), not dated. VERY GOOD HARDCOVER, some light foxing is present, else a nice clean tight copy, scarce. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall, Oblong. Signed by Charles Warren Stoddard.
