Large 8vo. 9.5 x 6.5 inches. [viii] + 306 pp. + 100 plates with captions opposite + 28 pp. index. Bound in original grey cloth, gilt, in unclipped pictorial dust wrapper, which has edge wear and sunned spine with slight loss and chips at head and tail. A little wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 100 engraved plates with captions. Facsimile of the first edition of 1890. A complete A-Z compendium of sail and early steam shipping, covering types, rigging, terms, construction, sails and equipment. The first part therefore includes descriptive sections on ship types and construction, machinery, equipment, sundries and miscellaneous. The second part is one hundred captioned plates, from keels to knots, including numerous diagrams of sailing ship rigging. It was the first attempt to illustrate and describe in English every part of a ship, including fittings and equipment, which had previously been virtually ignored, the numbering and labelling of each item being an innovation. Correct definitions of a ship were helped immeasurably by this work. Captain H. Paasch was born about 1836 and served in the Danish navy and later in various merchant vessels, gaining his own command in 1862. He retired from the sea and settled in Antwerp in 1870 as a ship surveyor. his first book From Keel to Truck, appearing in 1885. This marine dictionary proved very popular and was published in many later editions. David R. MacGregor, nautical writer, himself published numerous books on merchant sailing ships, including clippers. MARITIME ENCYCLOPAEDIA ENCYCLOPAEDIAS MARITIME SHIPS 19TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATED MARITIME.
