Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine -. Fourth Enlarged Edition. This particular copy is unique because it does not have the typical corrected tipped in copyright, but instead has an incomplete copyright statement that caused the author a great deal of trouble. The book was the subject of a copyright infringement lawsuit by the author against the A. S. Aloe Instrument Company. A. S. Aloe printed and published a quantity of the books without the author's permission, because Osgood accidentally didn't follow proper copyright procedure. Not only did she fail to deliver the two required copies of the book to the Library of Congress by the publication date (probably because she was unaware of a recent change in the law, which previously allowed authors ten days after publication to present their work), but the copyright at the reverse side of the title page was incomplete. According to the law of the time, the copyright should have read "Copyright, 1891, by Adelaide Osgood." Instead, it read "Copyright, 1891. All rights reserved." Because the author's name was not present, the copyright was ruled void, and the suit was dropped. Interestingly enough, Osgood realized that the copyright was misprinted and tipped in a new title page to the 522 copies of the fourth edition. However, according to the judge in the case, at least three copies without this corrected title page made it to the public (Circuit Court, E. D. Missouri, E. D. November 4 1897, No. 8,839). This particular copy is one of the ones without a tipped in title page, and sports the incomplete copyright statement. Blue fish and net pictorial spreading from front to rear light green covers, beneath strip of Maple leaves. Corners gently bumped. Green floral decorations at pastedowns and endpapers. Very small stain at right edge of page from pp 91-116, hardly noticable and not affecting text. Dj toned with small piece missing lower right corner front panel, small closed tear lower edge front panel, spine ends chipped, intact with flaps. 15 fish decoration example plates, one Bonbonnière example plate, and one rose example plate. No previous owner signatures or inscriptions. The Osgood Art School was one of the premier schools for advanced china painting at the turn of the 19th century, and was founded by the author, an Old Master porcelain artist. A rare copy; scarce in dustjakcet.
