Previous owner's name on front free endpaper. Issues of The Argosy from January to June 1873 bound into a single volume. Includes Johnny Ludlow Papers, The Master of Greylands, Amor Mundi by Christina Rossetti, Female Sufferage by Alice King etc. Occasional illustrations.

Quarter-leather and marbled boards, includes illustrations, nice frontis of a sailing vessel and rowboat, a well-preserved copy of this vintage publication, the former owner's name is neatly written on the blank front end-paper and some of the pages have scattered mild tanning/foxing, overall the contents are quite nice, the leather has mild edge-wear, the decorative spine with raised bands looks great ; 516 pages.

Hardback. Condición: Good+ set. Hardback. 2 volumes. Illustrated Victorian periodical edited by the novelist Ellen Wood better known as Mrs Henry Wood (1814-1887). Bounded in decorated green cloth with Greek key border to front board in gilt and black and decorative gilt titles to front and gilt titles to spine. Bevelled boards. Illustrated by M. Ellen Edwards. Mainly fiction but includes a long piece on Orkney and Shetland, by Charles Wood who went on to be the editor after his mother's death. Ffeps have been torn from both volumes which has cause the inner joint to split on volume XXV and volume XXV is also torn to cloth cloth at head of spine. Some foxing to prelims. cloth is clean and the gilt is bright. Some minor surface scuffs. Bindings are sound. Good+ set.

With contributions from Lady Jenkins, Sydney Grey, and illustrations by Ellen Edwards. Previous owner's signature on front free-endpaper of both volumes: 'L.M. Allen, June 30th, 1886)'. Ellen Wood, known as Mrs Henry Wood, 1814 - 1887, was an English writer and journal editor. In late 1867 she became editor and proprietor of The Argosy, a monthly magazine started by Alexander Strahan in 1865. Wood enlisted some other women contributors to The Argosy (Hesba Stretton, Julia Kavanagh, Christina Rossetti, Sarah Doudney, Rosa Nouchette Carey), but in the early years she may have written up to half of the contents of each issue. Bound in half calf with marbled covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed with shelf wear. Title labels on spine of volume twenty-seven has torn off and is beginning to tear and without careful handling will tear free. Previous owner's signature on front free-endpaper. Internally, hinges in volume twenty-seven are slightly strained but firm. Pages are firmly bound. Spotting to the first and last pages of both volumes, and a scattered spots throughout. A small stain on page 48 and 49 of volume twenty-seven. Good Only. book.

Mainly fiction but includes a long piece on the coast of Devon and Cornwall, with 16 illustrations, by Charles Wood who went on to be the editor after his mother's death; he also provides travelogues of Holland and Norway. Other contributors include the Irish novelist Julia Kavanagh. Volumes XXI and XXVII have some slight damage to the green labels. All volumes and a little faded, rubbed to edges and slight scuffed to surfaces. Text is clean to all volumes. All bindings are clean and sound. Good+ set.
