Dietz Press first edition (not stated but per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). [16], 126 pages. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 15.75cm. Pink dust jacket with some soiling and slight fading; a few nicks at edges; negligible short tear at front panel's bottom left; impression of removed price sticker at top of front flap. Dark red cloth with gilt stamping to spine and front board. Slight soiling to rear endpapers but interior pages are otherwise quite clean. Binding is firm. Still a fine copy in a very good+ dust jacket. A posthumous memorial volume of nineteen "sketches" or short stories by Betsy Hamilton (the pen name of Talladega, Alabama author Idora Elizabeth McClellan Plowman Moore, 1843-1929) compiled by stepdaughter Julia Moore Smith. The nineteen stories-essays are: "Betsy in a Storm;" "Hog Killin' in Hillabee;" "The S'prise Party;" "Pap's Bone Felon;" "The Quiltin' at Mis' Roberson's;" "The Writin' School;" "Mrs. Pinkney's Spring Spell;" "The Old-Time Camp Meetin';" "Neighbors;" "Zeke Scroogins, the Embarrassed Lover;" "Huldy;" "Superstitions of the Alabama Negro;" "Dat Quarter;" "'Daddy Mose' on Evolution;" "Susanna's Recipe for Batter Cakes;" "'Ketchin' a Chicken;" "A Question of Interest in Literature;" "Neely's First Love;" and "Kizzie in Liberia." With b/w frontispiece portrait of the author, an Introduction by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, newspaper editor/owner, and Georgia politician Clark Howell, and a Foreword by Julia Moore Smith.

Dark green textured cloth over boards with gilt title and decorative diamonds in gilt rule to front board. Previous owner's name written at front pastedown; heavy foxing to front flyleaf and frontispiece; soiling and foxing to margins and gutter scattered throughout; stamping from text to a few pages throughout. Text block is sunned, soiled and foxed; foxing to endpapers. Boards are soiled with chipping and fraying to cloth along spine edge; rubbing, bumping and creasing to edges, corners and ends of spine. Binding is tight, spine leans.
