A travel narrative in the form of 52 letters by two women who financed their travels along the East Coast in 1853 as subscription booksellers, with accounts of visits to the pre-war south (Norfolk, Richmond, Raleigh) as well as Canada, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey. They give accounts of the society they encounter as well as commentary on their reception as women traveling alone. They tread carefully around the subject of women's independence but clearly are in favor of it as shown by their own lives. Generally accepted as non-fiction and cited as "a real contribution to travel literature" by Clark, Clark III: 361, Howes 513. Sabin 47798.
