Small octavo, pp. [3-5] 6-348; [iii-vii] viii [9] 10-284, three quarter leather and marbled boards. First one volume edition and first printing of the expanded text of the first title; first edition of the second. Marsh-Caldwell, as she was known after she inherited the family estate in 1858 until her death in 1886, married a banker who was ruined by a swindler. Her literary career was encouraged by Harriet Martineau, and when her husband died in 1849, leaving her to support seven children, she became a prolific writer of novels and stories, and of children's books. The first of the two titles bound together here is a sentimental novel originally published in three volumes in 1844, of the bequest of Lady Evelyn, who dies young, to the son of a poor family to whom she owes a debt of gratitude, and its consequences. This 1849 edition is the first to print the third part of the novel. The second title is a collection of four stories of the French Revolution dedicated to the idea that "Revolutions are not the wisest means to employ for advancing the condition, or diminishing the pains, of humanity" (from the Preface). The stories are: "The Professional Visits of Le Docteur Noir" by Alfred De Vigny, "Sealed Orders" by De Vigny, "Limoelan" by Edward Oubliac, and "The Soldier's Fortune" latter uncredited. It is assumed that the translations are by Marsh. These titles were issued as numbers 26 and 31 of the "Parlour Library," in April and September 1849 respectively. NCBEL III 948. Block, The English Novel 1740-1850, p. 154. Sadleir 3755a. See Wolff 4557 and 4560. Both books bound without their half title leaves. Boards rubbed at edges, a very good copy. (#114846).
