First edition. A day-to-day, as well as an intimate diary of Bandlier's daily observations and moods, the Journals provide a firsthand account of a pioneering anthropologist's reactions to the Southwest. They contain the joys and frustrations Bandelier encountered in his early attempts to understand people and their environment. Bandelier traveled extensively in New Mexico during the years covered in the Journals. He visited nearly all the northern pueblos, lived at Santa Domingo for a short time, and spent many months at Cochiti where he observed and recorded ceremonies and delved into the social organization of the pueblo. This is the first two volume of a four volume set.
