The King Country. A professional gentleman explorer, Kerry-Nicholls faced immense difficulties and danger and the threat of a 'bullet through him' in his determination to penetrate the 'forbidden land' - 10,000 square miles held in the name of the Maori King and closed to Europeans. During his 600 miles of exploration, Kerry-Nicholls climbed Tongariro and also climed Ruapehu - twice, despite the ominous Maori legend that no man ever came back from its slopes. He and his companions bathed nude in the fabled Pink and White Terraces. Kerry-Nicholls came to New Zealand after travels in other exotic places - yet this Victorian adventurer was scholar and historian enough to include in his account of the King Country not only lists of the flora and fauna, but also an autobiography of the Maori King, Tawhiao Te Wherowhero, Potatau II.
