Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st American edition, 1978. A Near Fine copy in a Very Good dust jacket. 8vo., 166 pp., bound in blue leatherette with titles in gilt on spine with photo illustrated dust jacket. INSCRIBED in English and Japanese to Walter Boyd Jr. on end page, dated Jan. 31, 200- by Kawato. Very minor spotting to jacket. Light dust to text edges, otherwise clean and unmarked. Dust jacket now protected in mylar sleeve. Congressional Medal of Honor winner "Pappy" Boyington, whose popular autobiography Baa Baa Black Sheep has been praised as a war memoir that "ranks with the best," was shot down on January 3, 1944 (Boston Herald). That same day Masajiro Kawato, a young Japanese flyer, opened fire on an American Corsair F4U over the Pacific, following the plane as it "went into a dive, [maneuvering] left and right" until its pilot parachuted out and the plane went "down, skimming the surface of the ocean." Years later, when Kawato moved to the United States, he met "Pappy" Boyington and after the men became friends, concluded that the flyer shot down by that day was in fact the legendary American pilot. Abridged special edition, 1st American edition.

This Imperial Japanese Navy fighter ace is credited with shooting down 19 Allied aircraft, most notably that of "Pappy" Boyington of the Black Sheep Squadron in 1944; he later became a U.S. citizen and met and befriended Boyington. PS, heavy stock glossy 8" X 10", n.p., n.y. Fine. Handsome modern reproduction of a WW2-era informal full-length shot of Kawato standing in a field in full flight gear, boldly signed in blue fineline in a light area at upper left: "To: Ronald / Mike Kawato / [signature in Japanese characters] / Jan. 31, 1999." A great example.
