The Sims family moved to West Texas in the 1880's, starting out in the ranching business and introducing young Sims to the life of the cowpoke. Sims served a term as a state legislator and as a county judge. He had dealings with every variety of West Texan, including goat herders, railroaders, bankers, lawyers and lawmen, rustlers, politicos, medicos, and preachers. 296 pages, glossary. Text is clean, tight and unmarked. Judge Sims' signature is on the first free page. Quarter-bound cream cloth boards with gold-stamped author's signature are immaculate. Illustrated card case has a small chip missing along bottom. Judge Orland S. Sims (1881-1973) was was reared at Paint Rock and San Angelo, and graduated from the University of Texas in 1905 with a degree in civil engineering. He returned as a farmer and rancher to Concho County, where he later served as county commissioner, county judge (192735), and member of the Thirty-seventh Texas Legislature (1921). As county commissioner, Sims pioneered the use of tractors and heavy road-building equipment; he also helped form the Texas Good Roads Association. While he was a state representative, he helped draft the bill establishing the State Highway Department (now the Texas Department of Transportation). A long time student of area history and of archaeology, Judge Sims published two books in recent years, "Gun Toters I have Known" recounted exploits of some of the early-day outlaws and peace officers of the area and "Cowpoke, Nesters & So Forth" recounts his observations of the changing situation from the time his parents moved to Paint Rock.
