Product Description:Hannibal's War is a two-player, three-player or four-player wargame of intermediate complexity, simulating the struggle to gain control of the western Mediterranean and the lands surrounding it during the late 3rd century BC. That struggle historically pitted Rome against Carthage in a titanic clash that shaped the fate of the Western world for the next several centuries. The historical scenario therefore also pits two players against each other, one commanding Rome and the other Carthage. Third and fourth players can be added, however, to explore the possibilities had the 2nd Punic War grown even larger through greater Gallic and Macedonian participation. Each player has a variety of military and political instruments with which he can attempt to carve out an empire and annihilate his foes. The game uses an evolution of the system first presented in the earlier, and much liked, S&T game "1066." It's designed by S&T Editor Joseph Miranda. The square-grid map shows all the western and central Mediterranean from Iberia on the west to Greece in the east. Each square equals 100 Roman miles from side to side. Each of the iconic units within the large-size counter-mix (176 total), by famed artist Nicolas Eskubi, represents about 5,000 to 20,000 combatants. The unit-types represented include: legions, phalanxes, Gaesati (fanatic barbarian warriors), light infantry, cavalry, garrisons, war elephants, and fleets. Each of the 17 game turns equals one year, and experienced players can count on being able to finish a match in about four to six hours.

Product Description:1066 is a wargame of intermediate complexity, designed by Joseph Miranda, simulating the historic struggle to gain control of Britain during that crucial year of the 11th century. That struggle saw the Anglo-Saxons, under King Harold, defeat the Vikings, only to in turn be defeated by the Normans from France led by Duke William. His victory eventually led to the establishment of the modern British nation. 1066 can be played by two, three or four, each representing a different side: Anglo-Saxons, Normans, Vikings and Britons (the latter representing an amalgamation of the various peoples then indigenous to the island). Each of the 12 game turns represents a calendar month. Each fully iconic, large-size, unit represents roughly 1,000 to 5,000 fighting men or key individual leaders along with their elite 'household' troops. Each square on the 34x22" map represents 40 miles across, with all of England, Wales and southern Scotland, as well as the north coast of France, depicted on it.Each player has a variety of military and political instruments with which he can attempt to gain control of Britain. Every tactic and stratagem available historically to the would-be kings of England â from diplomacy through treachery, the laws of fealty and homage, vassalage, appeals to the Pope, assassination, pillage, shield walls, fortification, heavenly omens, gold, spies, rebellion, navies and, of course, savage warfare â are again in play here. The game contains one scenario, with adaptive rules that allow it to be played by two, three or four opponents. The rules contain approximately 14,000 words, which will allow experienced players to get through a complete game in about four to six hours.

Product Description:World at War number five has the following feature articles: â The Finnish Front, 1941-42â ; â Omaha Beachâ ; â The Ribbontrops: Father & Sonâ ; and â Sakaiâ s Longest Day.â The wargame featured in this issue is Joseph Mirandaâ s â Finnish Front, 1941-42â (TFF), which will be the fifth game published in his well-liked â They Died With Their Boots Onâ series. TFFâ s â Bootsâ system simulates what might otherwise appear to be hopeless campaigns, in this case the first stage of what the Finns call the â Continuation War.â It was fought between Axis (Finnish and German) forces and the Soviets during 1941-42, much of it north of the Arctic Circle. During that war the Finns recaptured the territory theyâ d lost to the Soviets in the Winter War of 1939-40. They failed to take Murmansk, however, which would have seriously hindered Allied Lend-Lease shipments to the Soviet Union. TFF is played in sequential â game turns,â each of which is composed of interactive â phasesâ and â sub-phases.â During each Operations Phase, the players alternate picking markers from the command pool; each such pick thereby indicating which sub-command will be â activatedâ for movement and combat at that time. The High Command marker causes the Orders From The High Command Table to be checked. The player controlling a selected sub-command receives reinforcements for it, if any are available that game turn, and then moves and conducts combat with the units of that sub-command. The armies in TFF are divided into â sub-commands,â each of which operates as a semi-autonomous force within its overall army. Sub-commands are defined by abbreviations and colored stripes on the unit-counters. Pulling certain markers will allow a player to conduct operations simultaneously with more than one sub-command. There are two scenarios in TFF, one covering just the 1941 campaign, and the â long game,â which extends play through September 1942. The game has been designed with two-player play primarily in mind, though solitaire play is possible. There are 13,453 words in the rules, meaning two experienced gamers can play the shorter scenario in about four hours.

The operation was a combined naval-air-land campaign in which all elements of military power were utilized. The historic campaign saw a German victory, but at the cost of much of the Kreigsmarine. Norway, 1940â s system is based on S&Tâ s award winning Red Dragon Rising system. It has been crafted to present the campaign as a unitary vision rather than a strictly sequenced process. The action can alternately telescope or expand, representing periods of rapid activity alternating with the slower process of building up forces. Most ground units represent either brigades or regiments. Aircraft units represent Luftwaffe â gruppenâ or groups of three Allied squadrons (36-60 aircraft). Ship units mostly represent one fleet aircraft carrier, divisions of two battleships, or four cruisers, squadrons/flotillas of about six to 12 destroyers, or various numbers of other ship types. Product Description:Minsk '44 -- the second game in Joseph Miranda's new East Front Battles Series, which began with Guards Tank in issue 13 -- covers the crucial exploitation phase of the great Soviet summer offensive against the Germans' Army Group Center, in June of 1944. The game utilizes the classic quad series rulesâ mechanics and a retreat-emphasizing differential combat system to encourage encirclement tactics, so typical of Soviet armor strategy during World War II.Minsk is a two-player (Soviet versus German) operational level game. The game includes 228 medium-sized die-cut counters, with the division as the primary maneuver unit, and also includes air units, untried units, blown bridge markers, and headquarters units. The colorful map features the area of the Third Belorussian Front during Operation Bagration, with each hex representing approximately 2 miles across, and includes such prominent locations as Berezina and the transportation center of Minsk. The rules entail a variety of standard and unique rules, such as Railroad Movement, â What ifâ Optional Reinforcements, Blowing Bridges, Untried Units, and the full range of historical unit formations, such as 5th Guards Tank Army, and the 505th Heavy Armor unit, etc.Victory in the game is determined by the accumulation of VP for control of important hexes, as well as evacuating friendly units.Articles include:Green US Forces at Kasserine, 1943. The fierce German counterattack against rookie US forces in North Africa that led to Pattonâ s promotion to army command.Savo Island. A revisionist interpretation of this near-miss Japanese naval victory off the coast of Guadalcanal late in 1942.Hitlerâ s Military Conferences. An analysis of the procedures Hitler used to arrive at his big military decisions.

Product Description:Chosin: X Corps Escapes the Trap, is a two-player, intermediate-complexity simulation of the fighting in eastern North Korea in late 1950 in which the Chinese attacked the United Nationâ s X Corps as it approached the Yalu River. One of the more famous incidents of the campaign was the US Marine Corps 1st Division fighting its way out of an envelopment at the Chosin Reservoir. Chosin, designed by Joseph Miranda, covers the entire campaign using the same game system as Gauntlet, which appeared in Strategy & Tactics 190. The two games are compatible, and the Strategic Scenario included in this issue provides instructions, as well as extra units, to create a combined Chosin/Gauntlet game of the entire Chinese offensive of 1950. Players can also use the Chosin rules and charts to update Gauntlet. Each game turn equals one day. Each hex represents 2.5 miles (four kilometers). Units of maneuver are mostly UN regiments and brigades of 1,500 to 5,000 men, while each Communist divisional counter represents about 6,000 to 24,000 men. Each air UN unit represents 30 to 50 sorties. There are 280 NATO-style, small-size (half-inch) counters, including errata-fix replacements for Gauntlet. Special rules cover: naval gunfire support, aerial combat operations, air transport, aerial supply, naval supply and troop transport, limited intelligence, bridge destruction and repair, fog of war, meeting engagements, organizational integrity, entrenchments, partisans, special forces, combat engineers, and the possibility of atomic warfare. The short scenario will take two experienced players about four to six hours to complete.

Product Description:Part of the first volume of "They Died With Their Boots On", which uses an interactive game turn in which both players command an overall force made up of several sub-commands. During each turn, players alternate picking "command markers," which designate the sub-command within their force they may then use to conduct operations. The player then moves units of that sub-command and, at the completion of its movement, conducts attacks with units of that same sub-command. Play then passes to the other player, who similarly picks a marker and moves and fights. That procedure continues until all command markers have been picked. Additionally, certain events cause players to pick "heroism markers" at random, which may generate anything from mad, impetuous charges to abject surrenders. The rules are divided into the standard rules, which are common to all games in the system, and the scenario rules, which provide deployment and reinforcement instructions, as well as victory conditions, for each specific battle game. In this game, each turn represents from three days to three weeks, depending on the level of intensity of campaigning, and each hexagon on the map represents 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) across. US Army units are battalions (actually task-organized sub-divisions of regiments). Indian 'units' each represent groups of warriors, with about 80-120 individual per strength point.
