Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Sm4to. 9 1/4" by 6 3/8". 428pp. Frontispiece of R. W. Johnson with tissue guard. One other b&w full-page illustration of a Kentucky country school-house. Very good first edition book, no dust jacket. Dark green cloth covered boards with gilt-stamped lettering and graphics on spine. Front and back board edges are beveled. Boards and spine are scuffed in general. Edges and corners at head and tail of board spine have small splits and frays. Lower fore-edge corners are rubbed through. Spine is sunned, more so on the upper end and with a small stain toward the center. External page edges are aage- and soil-darkened and with faint foxing. Teal end papers. Front inside hinge is cracked, FFEP has small amount of tape residue. Text pages are age-toned and with an occasional smudge, else internally clean. Gutter cracked at pp. 200-201. The author describes service in the West (Texas) before the Civil War. Includes several famous forts, experiences during the Civil War, and life in Minnesota after the War. Includes a short section on the Sioux uprising in Minnesota of 1862. Johnson ran for Governor of Minnesota in 1881, but lost to Lucius Hubbard. He died in St. Paul in 1897 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery.
