Manuscrito
2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. Endorsed by the unnamed recipient on the reverse of the second leaf. The subject of the letter, 'Mr Maule', was presumably a relation of Jardine's, whose mother's maiden name was Maule. Begins: 'Dear Sir, I received your parcel this morning & was prepared to start Tomorrow (Friday) when the Evening Mail brought me the intelligence of the Dangerous illness of Mr. Maule in Edinburgh - & instead of London I start for Edinburgh without delay I shall not now come up before the Meeting of Parliament as I should be now too Late for my Son's Holidays -'. He ends with the request that he write 'a few lines after your interview with Mr Graham'. In a postscript he says that he will 'write a note from Edinburgh stating how Mr Maule is -'.

Decorative Cloth. Condición: Fair. 1st Edition. A fair copy of the 1st edition of British Butterflies, vol III of Entomology from the Naturalist's Library edited by Sir William Jardine. In newer cloth binding with the original gilt titles pasted to the spine, with 34 plates of which 32 are hand coloured. With frontispiece portrait of Werner; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Werner; text 246 pp; and 2 plain plates and 32 hand coloured plates at the rear. The binding is a plain blue cloth which is clean and has turned corners. There is a decorative bookplate at the front pastedown endpaper and a bookseller's label on the fep. Internally the usual preliminaries (eg volume listing, half title) are missing, as is the publisher's listing from the rear. There is no tissue guard to the frontispiece and there is an old signature at the top of the vignette title page. Text pages are generally clean with very toned paper and some dog-earing to corners. The plate paper is lightly toned - particularly towards the edges and there is offsetting to tissue guards (two lack guards). A couple of the plates have a cropped bottom edge which does not affect the image - but does suggest that they may have come from another copy. Plate 31 has a crease affecting the lower side edge and bottom corner. Some corners and edges are a bit dog-eared and fragile.

Cloth. Condición: Very Good. Edward Lear Ilustrador. 1st Edition. A very good copy of the first edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 30 hand coloured plates of pigeons from drawings by Edward Lear. Lear provided the illustrations for Pigeons and Parrots in the Naturalist's Library, and his work is distinctive for its accuracy combined with an ability to make the subject seem alive. The Pigeons volume is also unusual in the Naturalist's Library series because the backgrounds to the birds are partly coloured. Contents: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Pliny; hand coloured vignette title page with ring pigeons; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Pliny by Andrew Crichton; and text with black and white illustrations and 30 hand coloured plates. Publisher's adverts at the rear. The binding is faded to spine and board edges, with the spine being slightly blotchy. The spine has some pulling to the ends and a small crease. There is light wear to the corners. The original green endpapers are present with a couple of small hole at the front endpaper joint. Old ownership signature at the fep. Plates and text are very clean with beautiful colouring to the plates. The paper to both the text and plates is lightly toned towards the edges. Tissue guards have some offsetting. The backing is visible in the gutter at p 96.
