Anonymously compiled anthology of fiction, nonfiction and poetry by twenty-eight mostly contemporary American and British writers. Contributions by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry W. Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Russell Lowell, and others. A 16-page Ticknor and Fields book catalogue dated April 1861 is inserted at rear. BAL 5943. Lavender cloth faded to tan on spine panel and a bit faded on front and rear covers, more so the latter (fading is common to this cloth color), some scattered foxing to plates and text block, but mostly clean, a very good copy, quite nice actually.
