Small damp stains at top and bottom edges. Gift notation on front endpaper. Some wear to DJ edges. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was a Polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, and one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. After the race to the South Pole ended in December 1911 with Roald Amundsen's conquest, Shackleton turned his attention to the crossing of Antarctica from sea to sea, via the pole. To this end he made preparations for what became the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-17. Disaster struck this expedition when its ship, Endurance, became trapped in pack ice and was slowly crushed before the shore parties could be landed. The crew escaped by camping on the sea ice until it disintegrated, then by launching the lifeboats to reach Elephant Island and ultimately the inhabited island of South Georgia, a stormy ocean voyage of 720 nautical miles and Shackleton's most famous exploit. Drawing on previously unavailable sources, this riveting account of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition to Antarctica presents, for the first time, 150 images by Australian photographer Frank Hurley, whose stunning visual record of the ordeal was--amazingly--preserved.

From the 1920s to the 1970s, Oswald Ziegler was unarguably the most prominent Australian publisher of promotional publications. Many of his successes were collaborations with major Australian photographers, his magnificently producedAustralia 1788-1938being no exception, as it features the colour photographs of Frank Hurley. The unique ephemera that accompanies the present copy came from the archives of the book's printer, Simmons Limited, and it provides valuable behind-the-scenes insights into how such a significant publishing venture, marking such an important occasion in the young history of Australia's European settlement, was accomplished. Description from the Sydney Morning Herald Tuesday, 27 September 1938: '. a magnificently produced volume, which, as the Prime Minister, Mr. Lyons, states in his foreword, should be a valuable souvenir for everyone who has been associated - whether as a spectator or as an actual participant - with the celebrations commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the foundation of Australia. The volume is a worthy record in photographs - many of them in colour - and letter-press, of the progress and achievements of the Commonwealth.'.
