Hardcover. Condición: Good. By the author's own admission, Simple came into the world casually, as a wartime propagandistic device to encourage African Americans to support the Allied cause in WWII. Simple's folk wisdom, humor and his love of life have enchanted readers, but beneath the surface, the reader will see glimpses of a loneliness and adversity Black Americans lived with without losing their daily routine. 256p.

hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Dustjacket. 1st edition. New York. 1960. Crown. Reprinted Hardcover Edition. Very Good. No Dustjacket. 207 pages. hardcover. keywords: Literature Africa Anthology. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Only a continent in ferment could produce a book like this - lively, moving, outraged, desperate, rich in humor - in short, a reading experience as exciting and varied as Africa itself. Over six years in preparation, AN AFRICAN TREASURY paints perhaps the most authentic portrait yet of this troubled, and still unknown, land, because here, for the first time, speaks the voice of native Africa - the black Africans themselves. What white writers think of the once Dark Continent' we long have known,' says Mr. Hughes. These pages tell what black writers think.' And what a story they have to tell! From strange and wonderful primitive folk stories to the polished political persuasions of United Nations delegates, from scholarly studies of the language of drums to raw cries of protest at the policies of apartheid, from vigorous work songs to the lyricism of native poetry, even from the amusing notes in a lonely hearts column, the picture emerges: Africa, a land of contradictions as dramatic as the anguish - and hope - that is sweeping across it like fire. The initial conception of this TREASURY stemmed from a short-story contest for indigenous South African writers sponsored by the editors of Drum, the Johannesburg magazine for nonwhites. Mr. Hughes was asked to be one of the judges, and as he read through the submissions ( many of them in longhand, often very hard to read, but pages which moved, surprised and quite delighted me'), he became more and more excited; here was a vast trove of writing which, until quite recently, was scarcely known - to say nothing of ever having been published outside Africa. He requested more material, and from all over Africa the replies began to flow in - to form the nucleus of AN AFRICAN TREASURY. All of these writings, no matter how different their approach and content, point toward a single goal. The Africans even have a term for it: African personality.' It is a term that should be followed by a question mark, really, because no continent so vast can be summed up in a single description; yet a distinctive and clearly recognizable personality does exist. It is broad enough to encompass the humor of Todd Matshikiza's monthly column in Drum; it shines through Can Themba's nostalgic reminiscences of the torn-down shebeens of Sophiatown (which may remind readers of the late John McNulty's pieces in The New Yorker about his favorite Third Avenue bars); it cries out through such moving protest pieces as Phyllis Ntantala's WIDOWS OF THE RESERVES. But no matter how contradictory it may seem, it is a personality, as Mr. Hughes points out, founded on a common bond, a common yearning, that may be best described by the stirring concluding response at the momentous Accra Conference: Mayibuye, Afrika! Freely translated, that means Long live Africa!' but the literal translation is: Come back, Africa!' Often called the poet laureate of the Negro people, Langston Hughes's writings are known - and read - the world over. His works include novels (NOT WITHOUT LAUGHTER, TAMBOURINES TO GLORY), poetry, A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE NEGRO IN AMERICA, humorous sketches (the enormously popular Simple stories), autobiography, plays, lyrics (for the smash hit Street Scene), etc. Two adaptations of his writing have even achieved great success on stage: SIMPLY HEAVENLY and SHAKESPEARE IN HARLEM. inventory #17407.
