Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 71pp. HARDCOVER This is a very unusual item, that is impossible to identify. Only a relative who already knows of the existence of this book would want to buy it. It is a memoir to a son who was killed in WW2. It is a biography, and a tribute to him. It is interspersed with developmental photographs, yet remains totally anonymous. I have skipped through the entire volume and can find not even a mention of his surname. It would appear to be deliberately made to be anonymous. It is a priceless piece of family history, if someone recognises the scant details available to identify it. Clean copy inside & out. No inscriptions. Gilt name to frt. cloth. No d/w - as issued. **The only provenance I can offer, is that of this book was purchased from a house clearance man who operates from Folkestone, Kent. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book.

Hardcover. Condición: Fair. 1st ed. Cover nearly detached, some foxing, fair. 8vo. 526p. Brown embossed morocco. A.e.g. The titles of books often hide their content. Such is especially the case with many books important to the study of rhetoric and composition. The present boo k is a case in point. On March 8, 1851, Robert Troup Paine, a student at Harvard, committed suicide. His parents--his mother died before the project could be completed--set out to compile a volume containing the themes, theses, forensics, and letter s written by their son in the Primary School of the University of the City of New York, the Grammar School of Columbia College, and Harvard. We count at least 91 different compositions. This book, then, stands as a significant resource for the study of mid-nineteenth century composition. Since it was written as a memorial volume only for private distribution among the friends of the deceased, few copies can have been printed.

According to his son's entry in the Oxford DNB, John Catnach 'was ahead of his time in publishing cheap attractively illustrated books, including children's books, but was a poor businessman. Working in Newcastle, he was imprisoned for debt, and in an attempt to mend his fortunes by moving to London with his family in 1808 he only sank deeper into poverty. In 1813 he died, broken in spirit, of an infected leg.' He was associated with Thomas Bewick, who was one of the creditors named at his first bankruptcy, and printed 'The Beauties of Natural History, selected from Buffon's History of Quadrupeds', 'Poems by Percival Stockdale' and 'Poetical Works of Robert Burns' all with Bewick woodcuts. BBTI has him trading in Berwick , 1790-1791; Alnwick, 1790-1808; Newcastle, 1808-1812; and London, 1812-1813. The Honourable Coast Committee of Northumberland was an organisation, founded on subscriptions, for the foundation and maintenance of a series of beacons along the Northumberland coast, as a defence against French invasion.
