Condición: Good. 80 x 58.5 cm. Offset lithograph on coated card stock with silver embossing.Marcel Duchamp / Oculist Witnesses', Poster, 1968Edition size unknown.Published by Petersburg Press, London.Printed text on the verso:'MARCEL DUCHAMP The 'Oculist witnesses' a detail from the reconstruction by Richard Hamilton of the large glass 'The bride stripped bare by her bachelors, even' Petersburg Press London' Petersburg Press London 1968. Printed in EnglandRichard Hamilton became an avid follower of Duchamp after first seeing his work in a 1952 Tate Gallery exhibition. Inspired, Hamilton began a project to translate Duchamp's Green Box into English. In 1966 Richard Hamilton made a replica of Duchamp's famous 1915 work ?The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even' also known as ?The Large Glass' for the Tate Gallery Duchamp retrospective, as the original was too fragile to be moved from its home at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Duchamp visited London to collaborate on this project, he even co-signed Hamilton's replica as a joint work, and Hamilton took the photograph featured on this poster of Duchamp (through the sheet of glass bearing the oculist witnesses) at his studio in Hurst Avenue in Highgate. One of Hamilton's fiberglass Guggenheim Museum reliefs can be viewed to the right.V&A Museum notes:Richard Hamilton says the poster was made from a photograph he made while Duchamp was signing glass for the multiple. He signed blank glasses so that the signature would not be reversed when the glasses were laminated with the image. Image and signature were sealed inside the lamination. The image on the multiple was made from a photograph transferred to silk screen. It was therefore possible to take a positive of the photograph, make a dye-stamp from it, and super-impose it on the poster image.

Condición: Good. One page prospectus for the portfolio with original polaroid by Bacon stapled on. NY Met: "In 1969, at the end of a characteristically wine-soaked lunch at Robert Carrier's London restaurant with the artist Francis Bacon (1909?1992), Hamilton asked Bacon to photograph him against the drapes of the dining room. The first exposure was blurry from Bacon's tipsy handling of the Polaroid, but Hamilton found the image to have an affinity with Bacon's distinctive style of painting. Working with oil on collotype copies of that portrait, Hamilton produced seven studies from which Bacon was to select his favorite. He chose the seventh study in which Hamilton had covered the blurred curtains with a particularly Bacon-esque violet.".
