Hardcover. Condición: Very good-. First edition. Sammelband of two uncommon works, the first in two parts, published between 1768 and 1771, small folio: [14], 96; [2], 78pp. Divisional title for second part; [12], 14pp. Woodcut head- and tail pieces. Contemporary tree calf, spine with raised bands, gilt label at spine, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Covers worn with some worming; marginal repair to first title-leaf; mild embrowning to second part, else very good, amply-margined, clean copies, each work complete with half-titles. Scarce collection of dissertations on Hungarian origins, and a notable monument of late eighteenth-century ethnographic controversy. The Jesuit librarian and archivist Jósef Ince Deseriz (or Desericzky, 1702-1763?) was elevated to cardinal by Benedict XIV and is best known for his 5-volume history De initiis ac majoribus Hungarorum commentaria (1748-60). György Pray (1723-1801), abbot, canon, and librarian of the University library of Buda, was appointed imperial historiographer by Maria Theresa. Relying on the results of new research by French orientalists, especially Joseph de Guignes, "Pray strove to situate the history of the nomadic Huns and the Hungarians in a broad comparative analysis of the wandering of nomadic people in late antiquity" (Klaniczay). The literary controversy he initiated by criticizing certain passages in the magnum opus of Deseriz grew viscious; upon the death of Cardinal Deseriz, Benedek Cetto (1731-1799) took up the gauntlet by publishing the present dissertations, for which he provides introductions. Joseph de Guignes (1721-1800) succeeded Fourmont at the Royal Library as Secretary Interpreter of the Eastern Languages. His Memoire historique sur l'origine des Huns et des Turcs (1748) obtained his admission to the Royal Society of London in 1752. As the final part of the present collection reveals, he obstinately clung to the opinion that the Chinese nation had originated in Egyptian colonization. References: DeBacker & Sommervogel 6:1183.
