More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Moderate cracking to gutters causing some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild staining, tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Book has a slight forward lean.

The cover has wear as seen in photo but the interior is clean, unmarked and bright. 270 pages + ads. The author, having travelled for decades in the area, describes conditions, customs, people, society, natural history, etc. The chapter on New Guinea was read before the Royal Geographical Society in 1873. Many b/w illus. from woodcuts, full page and in text.

Very rubbed to edges, contemporary library plate, previous owner's plate, good condn. The missionary William Wyatt Gill (1828-1896) worked mainly in the Cook Islands from 1852 to 1872. A long section of the book (pp 198-270) also describes a visit to New Guinea. Numerous illustrations.

Binding lightly scuffed; gold embossed cover and spine title very bright. Boards show some wear at the spine (lightly rubbed) and along the edges. Interior is clean and bright, save for a small ownership stamp on the second free end paper. All in all a very good copy.

Reprint - 1st 1855, this signed 1869. f/piece+vi with map verso+344, decorative chapter head-pieces and end-piece at end of text, 18 further engr.plates ex-pagination, 3 smaller text figs, 1 further map on recto of a plate All as called for in Illustrations list); papers split on end-gutters exposing netting but these remain tight and secure, 1869-dated signature top recto f/piece but no other date, otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked bar a few small, light, tanning spots recto rear endpaper faintly off-set on facing page below the end of the text; covers excellent being clean and unworn bar trivial token corner bumping. Originally issued in 2 vols, presumably divided between Eastern and Western Polynesian parts. Chapters each devoted to a different island, 19 in all, including Raratonga, New Caledonia and Tongareva. As title indicates this is primarily focused on author's missionary work. Only significant flaw is the end-gutter openings, otherwise would rate VG or better. Size: 13 Cm x 19 Cm.

'Printed for Private Circulation' on t.p. f/piece portrait with tissue-guard+316, plate with tissue-guardof his memorial in Rectory Place Chapel, Woolwich facing p.314; major fault is excision of nearly all front endpaper leaving 2 cm. strip along gutter, otherwise clean aside from occ. small faint tanning spots to t.p. and last leaf, quite unmarked and tight with good end-gutters, top edge has some ingrained dustiness; bevelled edge covers excellent being bright and clean with no significant wear, blind-stamped top and bottom edge borders. Islands visited included Raratonga, Samoa, Eromanga, New Hebrides and Maniiki. Loss of front endpaper regrettable but remains VG- in my view due to age and general condition otherwise.
