Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original mimeographed document printed on beige paper with staple binding. No date, circa 1935. 8 1/2" x 11." Forty-three pages, complete. Slight browning to the page edges. Edges slightly worn. Fold in the lower-right corner of the first two leaves. Mary Austin (1868-1934) was an American author who wrote about Indigenous culture and sociological topics. The State Emergency Relief Administration (SERA) was created in 1933 as part of the New Deal to distribute state and federal funds to help with unemployment relief during the Great Depression. SERA was succeeded by the California State Relief Administration (SRA) in 1935. The Contents of this Monograph include a Prefatory Note, Bibliography, Biographical Data, Critical Estimates, Bibliography of Criticism, and Index. Prefatory Note by Joseph Gaer is as follows: "In the Preface to the first monograph in this series, the one on Jack London, it was not made sufficiently clear how this material has been assembled and what it proposes to accomplish. These monographs are sections of the work done on a project, known as 'The California Literary Research Project,' instituted by the SERA during the autumn of 1934. It is principally concerned with the compilation of an adequate and, as far as possible, complete Bibliography of California Literature; and designed to absorb a group of unemployed writers, newspaper-reporters, bibliographers, and literary research students in a task where their education and training would be applied to a highly valuable undertaking. The project has been limited, so far, to California Fiction; and widened to include biographical sketches, critical estimates, and a bibliography of criticism. The work of some 1200 authors will be included in this Bibliography. Some of these authors are of such importance on the California literary scene that their work, with biographical sketches and critical estimates are presented separately--in the form of this monograph on Mary Austin. Some monographs will also be released dealing with specific periods in California Fiction (such as the Gold Rush Period); special branches of fiction (such as Juvenile Fiction); a Bibliography of Criticism of California Fiction; Foreign Language Fiction Writers in California, etc. Credit for the work here presented is due to all the collaborators on this project, though their names remain anonymous.".
